I want to start a thread concerning the ever increasing changes that are made to the types of products available to painters. It seems that every year they put more restrictions on products available. yet in doing so the quality of the products available decreases, this in effect makes it so that you have to paint your home ( at least the exterior) more often, and also releases more harmful elements into the air then before. Not to mention the more that gets dumped.
I often use products that are considered safe by the people who print the labels, but they often give me headaches and sting my eyes, where as say when using oil based products I have no issues. A oil based products can last in an interior with only minor yellowing for 50 years while a water based/latex product can only last say 15 years, and on an exterior the periods are even less, I find myself more often then i like to admit repainting exteriors of homes that I or someone else has painted within the last 10 years. while I sometimes come across homes with oil based finishes that have not been painted in 50 years, and look better then the homes painted with latex 10 years ago.
I have heard that the golden gate bridge is a continual year-round project that requires painting from end to end constantly with a PRIMER, and hasn't had a actual FINISH coat of paint since lead based products were made illegal. What a drain on the economy. This is a union job, with the crew members getting paid hazard pay as well as prevailing wages, how much do they make an hour? How many painters does it take? What is the maintenance on the equipment they need to do there job?
There are so many things we could do that would lower the amount of polution, I mean seriously, does paint really affect the environment as much as 100 cars in any given area? Considering I have devoted my life to being a painter, I wish I knew more on this subject.
You can probably tell I am not the smartest person in this forum and I definately do not want to seem like it, I am hoping to gain some valuable information from this thread. I recently traded in my brand new V8 nissan titan for a sport compact, after spending $800-1200 a month on gas just to get to and from work, I can only imagine how much of an affect that had on the environment. I still see so many HUGE trucks on the road WITH NOTHING IN THE BED and I wonder how we could change that. Bigger isn't always better, I feel that its the RIDER not the RIDE that gives a better reputation. ~ Jay
