My mom has just been diagnosed with very late maturity onset diabetes. I've been doing a bit of research, but there are so many diabetic recipe books out there, I can't choose what to order/buy. I'm looking for both Mom and myself. Chances are I'll develop the same condition later on and want to start eating right in order to prevent or delay this.
We don't eat or cook with processed foods. We are not vegetarians and are unlikely to change that. Neither of us can eat Mexican food as our bodies react very negatively to it. We still tend to cook the way the French cook at home. I want to find tasty, easy to make recipes. We do eat dairy and would rather eat less of it than go low fat. I'm allergic to whole wheat and need to find a way to eat whole grains while avoiding any wheat bran. Any bread machine recipes would be appreciated. I want to modify my eating habits anyway in order to stop playing with those last fifteen pounds I need to lose. My research indicates that following a diabetic eating program would probably take care of that as "bad" carbs are my greatest indulgence.
Slow cooker recipes that do not involve the use of canned soups or other processed foods would also be appreciated. Most slow cooker recipes seem to use canned soups, vegetable oils, margarine and other ingredients neither of us eat.
Thank you for any recommendations or recipes you can offer.

HEALING FOODS COOKBOOK by PREVENTION MAGAZINE
Publisher: MJF Books, New York, NY, U.S.A.
Date Published: 1994
ISBN-13: 9781567310375 (https://www.alibris.com/search/books/isbn/9781567310375)
ISBN: 1567310370 (https://www.alibris.com/search/books/isbn/1567310370)
MY FAVORITE IN THE WHOLE WORLD Cookbook can only be found in used book stores and I rarely have paid more than $5 for it. I keep two on hand so I can cross reference stuff and highlight things.
It was written by the people at Prevention Magazine and I love it. It's not diabetic specific but the recipes are healthy and fresh despite it being out of print for several years.
1/3 of the book is about what foods help what ailments including diabetes, 1/3 is the foods and what they do such as almonds or blueberries etc and 1/3 is recipes (400 I think).

Hi Christine,
I really like Linda Rector-Page's, "Cooking For Healthy Healing--Diets and Recipes for Alternative Healing". Linda is an N.D. and Ph.D. This book is great for a wide variety of conditions, but does specifically address the dietary needs of a diabetic.
Best wishes on your journey!
Judy
