I just saw the movie, 'Perfume,' at home and I was delightfully surprised. I don't think I've ever experienced a film that took me for a loop like Perfume did. I found the movie a little hard to take at first because it is the story of a serial killer but it was very well done and Dustin Hoffman's performance was outstanding, although he was not the main character.

The movie had a subtle but crucial element of surrealism to it and reminded me of the surrealist classic, 'An Andalusian Dog,' by Bunuel and Dali and also the short-lived TV series from the 60's, 'The Prisoner.' Perfume has a totally unexpected scene toward the end that is an explosion of surrealism that I've never seen before in a movie. Quite interesting to see a movie take a sudden left turn, interrupting the logical flow that the plot had been slowly building up.

Was an excellent little read as well. I felt compassion for the guy despite the murder thing. I saw an ad for the movie when it was released, but never saw it around, thank you for the heads-up that it is now out there in video store land, and that Dustin Hoffman is a part. I will look for it today. Mindy

So Mindy, have you had a chance to see it at home yet? If so, how did you like it?

I have finally remembered both to pick it up and then to watch it...took a return to video land. I was surprised to find myself still with compassion for the murderous fellow, no matter what he did. Granted, if it were my daughter killed while trying to extract her essence, I as mama bear would have ended the spree and altered the screenplay...however, I feel for the guy based on his start in life and using his G-d given power to the best of his ability, plus being moved by fragrance myself gave me some understanding of the drive. The movie was quite well done no matter how you feel about it, I will stop typing as there may be folks who want to see and have yet to see the film. me
