WHAT TO BUY? Sleep Train, Mancini, DucBed? I want them to deliver of course. What is so incredibly comfy? My arms are falling a sleep, which of may also mean pillow change. Thanks!

Have you read this NYT Magazine article, The Sleep-Industrial Complex, from middle November. It's at

My arms were falling asleep until I had my atlas adjusted by Troy Roper, also check out natural mattresses, www.ecobedroom.com (https://www.ecobedroom.com)

Greetings,
Futons are now available with foam and spring layers, no longer the lumpy bags of the '60's. The Futon Shop in Santa Rosa has a great selection and are available in "Green" materials, natural latex, organic wool and cotton. I've got one and sleep much better on it.

Over 20 years ago, my husband and I bought a six-inch foam from Creator's Foam Shop in Santa Rosa. If I remember right, it was not their firmest, but was maybe their second firmest. It's an off-white or pale yellow foam. It has been in use every night since 1986, and shows no sign of giving up, although my side has a slight dip (I am way beyond zoftig!). Until recently, I would have recommended this as THE mattress to get. We've never had an innerspring, just a platform of half-inch boards nailed to a wood frame.

Recently I bought what was called a 1.5-inch Memory Foam mattress topper, from overstock.com; they were on sale and may still be. All sizes, from single to king, were the same price, $60, with no shipping charge; so I bought a king and trimmed it down with scissors.

It arrived in a very heavy rolled-up bundle. Instructions said to let it unroll itself, and to air it out for 48 hours. It had a strong chemical smell. It rolled itself out within an hour, and took a couple of days to air out.

The smell is negligible now. It's more like 2.5 inches thick than 1.5. It still easily fits, along with the foam mattress, under my current mattress cover and fitted sheet.

I had thought the original foam mattress was comfortable. I think now I did not know what true comfort is! The only drawback is that I have to pry myself out of bed every morning, with much nagging and cajoling! It is SO comfortable, and nice and warm on these cold winter nights in my unheated bedroom. It compresses softly under my body weight; when I get up it springs back into shape. I don't know if it'll be too hot in the summer but I'm willing to cross that bridge when I get there.

I'll tell you how comfy it is: my normally cheerful, good-natured dog SNARLS at me when I tell her to get up! Sorry, but I have to make the bed, don't I?

It has eased the aches and pains any person is subject to as s/he ages. I don't think I've slept this comfortable since I was a baby in my mommy's arms!

I recommend European Sleep Works in Berkeley. All of the materials are natural, as in real latex instead of synthetic foam, cotton, wool, etc. They have four different types. It's like sleeping on a cloud!

I've had one for 8 years and it's by far the best bed I've ever owned. There are separate adjustments for each side of the bed, and the mattress does not move around when your partner moves. Also, there is a ten-year guarantee.

I bought a pillow top instead of the temper pedic, and wish I'd bought the latter. My fiance did, and we both get better sleep on his bed. You spend quite a bit, but it is guaranteed for thirty years, as well.

After a few months of research and bed testing earlier in the fall, the finalists were a temperpedic or a Simmons Worldclass Beautyrest Pillowtop "Natasha" from Ashley Furniture. We finally decided to go with the Simmons Pillowtop because it also had a layer of memory foam under the pillowtop - a delicious sleep, and lots of coils, and all the other bells and whistles that come from a more expensive mattress.

Our biggest concern with the temperpedic was that my partner sleeps "hot" and the temperpedic tends to trap "hot" more easily.

We love the Simmons mattress even though we're having a bit of a rough time breaking it in. The sides are heavily fortified to not break down with repeated sitting on the edges, however the pillowtop middle is cushy and mushy and oh-so-inviting, so there's a bit of a valley happening until we get the sides more broken in. But comfort wise - it's amazing. No more arm or back pain, and it's like sleeping on a cloud.

I can't say enough about Select Comfort. On my queen sized there are two seperate chambers, so if you sleep w/someone, you both have total control over the firmness of your bed. I'll never have any other.
Peace.

I know the foam, particularly memory foam, mattresses are very comfortable (or so I hear), but I just want to add a cautionary note here. I don't want to burst anyone's comfy sleep bubble, but these foam mattresses are extremely toxic. Here's an article that goes into the toxicity of polyurethane foam. The article is talking about crib mattresses, so disregard the PVC part and scroll down to the part about polyurethane foam and fire retardants. Even though this article is talking about crib mattreses, polyurethane foam and fire retardants are in adult mattresses as well.

Natural Latex is the non=toxic alternative to foam, and some latex mattresses are said to be as comfortable as memory foam.
