Ho – Ho – Ho and Merry – Merry – Merry !

Well… these are not the only holiday sounds we hear at my home. There is the occasional heavy sigh of exhaustion, and now and then the “Grrrrr” of impatience. Sound familiar? Why is that we might ask. The answer is right under our little red noses… no matter which room we’re in.

As fun and exciting, charitable and loving, celebratory and festive, merry and happy this time of year can be, it’s also… well… kind of irritating. There was a time when I thought the moments of Bah-Humbugginess came from within me. Ha! Not so. It’s very much easier than that, and no therapy required.

Consider this. Our homes undergo little change during the course of a year: replace this, change that, paint something – and generally we don’t attempt to accomplish all these at once. Then comes December and we shake up our spaces, frequently beyond recognition. That’s what it is! That’s what’s causing the irritation! It’s chaos! Indeed, a form of chaos.

Continue considering, please. We move the living room furniture around to accommodate a holiday tree. We sneakily tiptoe gifts into the house and hide them in closets, cabinets, under the bed, everywhere ‘they’ might not look. Boxes of cards to note and envelopes to address on the buffet in the dining room. Greeting cards we receive on the fireplace mantle and bookcases. A storage box of decorations left in the corner of the entry way (put them up or put it away?). Rolls of wrapping paper, ribbon, tape, and gift tags in a variety of stations throughout the house. Wrapped gifts under the tree, and stacked at the front door – cheer coming and going. See? Each and every room is impacted by the activities of this month – as are we.

Whew! No wonder we get a little grumpy. Our homes are out of balance. Also because we are busy with Santa a stack of unopened mail expands on the corner of the desk or kitchen counter, the dirty laundry is abundant, fast-food is tasting better, and how many times did you press the snooze button this morning?

So if you are having some challenging moments during this holiday season, fear not. It may not be you, it’s probably your surroundings! When it’s all over, inhale a deep breath of gratitude, and return to a sense of order and familiarity. Your life will feel better.

We have so very much to appreciate and be grateful for. If you are reading this, I’m grateful for You. Have the happiest of holiday seasons and a new year filled with all your heart desires.

In gratitude and with an intention to serve,
