Hello community,

Please contact me is you are a member of Coaches Corner Fitness Center in Sebastopol.

Recently I sent a letter to Manager Mitch Lamb, regarding the construction and subsequent loss of many amenities, including locker room shower, sauna, spa, and toilettes.

My request was simple: please extend my contract for the duration of the construction, as during this period I am suffering the loss.

Mr. Lamb was adamantly opposed. He said I could quit, go to another club, or "freeze" my membership until construction concludes.

HOW MANY MEMBERS are out there, paying for services (yeah, paying big) that aren't there?

My contract, and your contract, is clear. I paid for the full set of amenities.

Mr. Lamb is in breach of contract, yet I don't have any legal knowledge to apply pressure for what is right.

Please help, thanks.

Threaten legal action like a trip to small claims court or a class action lawsuit.

His offer to freeze your membership protects your investment completely. I don't think you have a legal argument against that.

It would have been kind of him to offer you some perks to make up for the loss. He sounds like a poor businessman.

I think I'd be looking for an alternative club.

To Jeff, Nash, and all who replied privately,

Thanks for caring, and for your input.

It seems Mitch is a good guy, and his friends answered to testify.
Nothing personal here. Just disappointment that i have no choice in the matter.

Yes, he may be a good guy. He certainly is a shrewd profiteer. That's neither good nor bad... just is. I wouldn't do it this way. Of course, the shrewd part comes from the fact that there are no other choices in Seb.

He's cornered this market. That's why it's called Coaches Corner.
So, yeah I'll grab my little white flag and surrender, like everyone.
Ready? 1, 2, 3: Raise flags, lower hear, keep going. Let's do it for Mitch.
Let's do it for everyone.

Thanks again.

Eh! Sounds like an unsatisfying situation. That's too bad.

I'll share what we do for exercise. It's a whole lot cheaper than going to a club or spa and works so much better for us.

We bought a Soloflex Whole Body Vibrator. It's like an over sized skate board you stand on while you exercise. It comes with a DVD showing various ways to use it. It has an adjustable speed vibrator motor mounted underneath.

My wife stands on it, sets the speed that feels right for her, and does some stretches, Pilates exercises, and some belly dance moves while the vibration goes through her muscles. She usually works out for about 15 minutes at a time, once a day. She's now in better shape than she's been in for decades. She loves it.

I use small dumbells (25 lbs. heaviest) and do a pretty standard, brief, routine. I also do pushups and situps and leglifts on the board. I usually work out no more than 10 or 12 minutes at a time and then only four days a week or so.

I get as much benefit from this routine as I did working out for 2-1/2 hours a night, five nights a week at a spa using Nautilus style machines. I'm very fit for how little time I spend working at it.

You can peruse the Soloflex website to learn more. I think the benefits are very much undersold on that site because if they told the truth nobody would believe it.

This machine uses the same theories of operation as the vibrating platforms mentioned elsewhere on Waccobb. The main difference is that the Soloflex is affordable enough that everyone can tuck one under their bed, just like we do.

I don't work for the company or make any sales commissions from Soloflex, but most of my close family members and friends now have their own machines and are very jazzed with the results.

What's the magic? It feels good to exercise. You'll want to use it, unlike all the other exercise equipment you've tried over the years.

Best of luck,

-Jeff

Honestly, the most monetary damage you might be able to claim is the sign-up fee which is often $120 for an indefinite length of membership. But at times he does a special and doesn't charge a sign up fee. So is any action at all worth $120? I personally am sorry to see that money lost but it really is small potatoes.

I signed up at Langerman just up Bodega Rd. Its a rather nice place and they aren't charging a sign up fee for people coming from Coaches'. If you like a noisy, busy gym it may be disappointing. If you like good equipment, plenty of space without bumping into people, then it is a rather nice place to focus on the workout.

I've been going to Coaches' since the days it was in the building that is now Langermans. I do support Mitch because I've known him for so long. I'm not saying that he can do no wrong. I'm not making that claim for myself either.

Yo! Quit your whining! and Hey, I know who you are!!
Good luck getting ANY compensation from the Club, getting your membership renewed, or getting into any other club locally, for that matter.

And to all you who responded in sympathetic support -- what about instead supporting a great local business who's prices are fantastic and owners good people...instead of encouraging stupid greedy litigious behavior, of which there's all too much in this world... just because you can????

You just did that. Interesting you were the first, but it's good input. Thanks.

Hmmm. I think I responded with sympathetic support but discouraged litigious behavior. Is there a category for that behavior?

Just wondering, :):

I can see both sides of this story......(what a concept!)

As far as working out at a gym where there are no toilets, it's pretty hard if you are training, drinkiing water as you should be and have to leave to relieve yourself. Also, there are people who are so busy that the only time they can work out is on the way to or from work, or between other tasks.
Taking that into consideration, not having a shower, while secondary to a toilet is an inconvenience. I understand why a member would feel like they are not getting their money's worth and would want some recognition by the ownership of that circumstance.

On the other hand, as a previous fitness facility owner, I realize that (a) the construction is likely to be of a nature that is improving the gym, (b) the revenues from memberships are what keeps the business going and (c) there are inifinite behind-the-scenes details that need to be dealt with on a daily basis that users of the gym are not typically aware of.....it can create a lot of stress trying to keep things functioning as they should.

If I were a disgruntled member, I would ask for an extension on my membership (I don't no how long this construction is supposed to take) but maybe a month or two at the most and if I were the owner, I'd grant it. Or, freezing the membership could be an option but I don't see how that truly benefits anyone.

There's my two cents. By the way, Jeff, I am going to check into that Soloflex.....sounds amazing and I am usually not a fan of equipment designed for home use. My other comment to you is that I was a (very small) part of that seemingly endless "What do men want?" dialogue and while it started to get annoying to get all those emails and I began just deleting them without reading, I always opened yours.....you sound intelligent reasonable, balanced and just a nice guy.

Peace,
Marcy

I thought the writer of the original post had a reasonable question which he put out to the community, whether or not one agrees with his stance. Dave, I suggest you go to Nolo press website as it has good self-help tips, but the truth is it probably isn't worth it, however you could put your concerns in writing to "Mitch" and perhaps he'll hear those concerns from others, too, and reconsider. "Erikka" your reply seemed rather hostile to me. Of course you "know who he is", he signed his name. One could argue that "Mitch" has also benefited from the community, not just given, as has the writer. In any case Dave, good luck and maybe Jeff's suggestion is the best one. Gypsey

Hey, when you're done suing Coaches Corner, sue her for Defamation of Character.
