October 1, 2007
The ongoing pro-democracy demonstrations in Burma initially led by tens of thousands
of Buddhist monks and nuns, now being brutally suppressed by the military, has created an urgent need for humanitarian aid. The military has isolated many monasteries by surrounding them with barbed wire, while beating the monks inside who are suspected of participating in the demonstrations. In some reported cases the military even looted the monasteries. Many monks, and probably some nuns, have been beaten in the streets and many taken off to jail. All this has occurred in the first 20 days of demonstrations. The final results of the demonstrations will not be known for some time, but what we know for sure now is that a great deal of human suffering is and will continue to be an outgrowth of the military’s response.
The monastic community in Burma and, in particular, the brave monks and nuns who led the marches, are suffering now and will for some time into the future. Communications, food and other necessary supplies have been cut off or significantly reduced in many monasteries and nunneries. Civilians are also at risk of imprisonment and other repercussions for their support of the protests. The local communities that support the monastics had little to give before the demonstrations, and have much less to give now. Prices of all commodities have risen sharply since the government increased energy prices, making it even harder for these people to survive. In addition to the suffering inside Burma, more Burmese are fleeing to refugee areas in Thailand.
The Foundation for the People of Burma can provide emergency humanitarian aid to the affected monasteries and nunneries in Burma. We have been working inside Burma and on the borders for seven years and have developed a solid network of people who can help us get relief directly to the monastic communities. Through our experience in emergency situations like the tsunami, we know how to act swiftly and effectively to provide help.
We are writing to you because you are supporters of the Foundation and are aware of our work. Now we are asking you for additional support, whatever you can give, to help these brave people in their fight for freedom.
