Dear Community, I have been an activist in this community for over 15 years and have sent out many notices to all of you about public meetings concerning issues that will effect us all.
What I want to understand is why only a handful of people out of the thousands in this network ever attend.
Democracy is not a spectator sport, and, although many of you bemoan the veritable dictatorship and police state we are presently living under, you don't do anything about it within the political realm.
All realms of human exicstence need our attention, and a spiritual consciousness can be brought into the political as well.
On the local level you can always have an opportunity to speak or write your representatives to influence public policy.
Some examples of what needs your attention are the fact that we have a Green Majority in Sebastopol and yet the 3 Green men consistantly vote for the use of pesticides, while the 2 Democratic women vote to oppose.
If organic food people would pressure the Greens this would not be the case.
You may think you are eating organic, but I can tell you, you are not breathing or drinking organic. Do you care that other species are dying and becoming extinct because of these genocidal poisons?
The water issues are huge and yet the Sebastopol council just approved a water supply assessment that, well, will not hold water, and has been ripped apart by the brilliant editorial by local activists, Jane Nielsen and Helen Shane. The same 3-2 vote happened here as well.
The General Plan is being formulated and business and agricultural old school disregard for environmental safeguards are definitely being heard loud and clear.
Then there's the fact that Santa Rosa City Council is on the verge of approving a Walmart for Roseland, once again exploiting the Latino community. Walmart, across the board, is the worst corporation on the planet, and the biggest.
The largest lawsuit, effecting 1.6 million women, is now in the courts against Walmart for its discriminitory policies.
It sucks the life out of a community.
Why do you not act locally, and think globally?
It is often easier to become outraged by injustice half a world away than by oppression and discrimination half a block from home. ~Carl T. Rowan
Democracy does not function if all you do is vote.
In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.
Martin Luther King Jr.
and one last quote from Martin.
History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
I have been struggling with this question for some time and hope to hear some honest, and respectful responses.
I rarely enter into discussions here because they seem to quickly descend into disrespect by a few who seem to be addicted to flaming each other.
In advance I will tell you I will not respond to such communiques.
We are babies in using this medium of communication and I for one want it to be a healthy place to speak.
I love to serve this community and do it with all my heart because I have a profound faith that a new loving world is being born.
So when I speak at meetings I am not defeated or overly elated by losses and wins, I just hope my words give inspiration and shed light on the truth.
Many Blessings, Magick
