I had a dream of the american flag with lots of lovely brown spots on it...

...after I had used it to wipe my ass many times over. I especially liked the thick, crusty parts where the skid marks were more visible than the stars or stripes!

What a shitty ass, pathetic country we live in, full of shitty people who believe in torture. The hell with all of them (and they call themselves patriots).

I said neither. if you don't like torture, you should speak out about it,
and if you know of a country that doesn't torture you should do the same

I will respond to your post. But it will be a quick version of the whole story because your question deserves a lengthy answer.

Most Western European and Northern European countries are better places to live than in the U.S. Their standard of living is higher and the quality of their democracies is higher. I have lived in Europe for ten years (Spain and Denmark) but I have traveled extensively, and learned about many other countries. I have a BA in Political Science from SSU and have studied not only the governments of other countries but also their histories, economies and their societies in general. I make a well informed assessment when I compare my country, the U.S., with those other ones.

Without going into specifics myself, you can go to the CIA factbook (for example see: www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/gm.html) and also look up different countries' stats and other general info in Wikipedia (for example see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France as well as some others). These are just some sources. You can go to the libraries at SRJC or SSU and ask the reference librarian for help on how to do research on this stuff using their databases, computers, and other resources.

Rather than have me tell you why theirs is better and how, etc, please make an informed decision for yourself. If you still think afterwards that the U.S. is the greatest country in the world I will respect your opinion even though I disagree with it. Do the research for yourself and don't trust me or anyone and arrive at your own conclusions.

What would I change here? Well, a whole heck of a lot of things. For starters, I would change the electoral system (e.g. electoral college) and the way in which we elect our public office holders. I would replace the present "first-past-the-post" system with proportional representation and instant run-off voting (although I would preferably eliminate single member districts altogether). You can check these at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-past-the-post
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proportional_representation
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant_runoff_voting

You can read about multiparty systems and Duverger's law:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiparty
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duverger%27s_law

The U.S. inevitably has a poor quality democracy and a two party system precisely because of the first-past-the-post election method. By reforming the electoral laws in the U.S. and having a multiparty system then almost everyone will have representation through different political parties. This would drastically remap the political institutions and bodies in the U.S. and increase the quality of our democracy and the rest of our society as a result.

Why don't I "love it or leave it?" Well, I'm a U.S. citizen and I have a right to live here and I also have a right to criticize things here as well. I also have a right to change the laws in this country like any other citizen or political party or association.

"Leave it?" Well, I just might. I already sojourned in Europe for ten years and I might go back some day to live there permanently. But while I'm here in the U.S., I will raise my voice as high and as annoyingly as I possibly can. I will criticize things as I see them and I will continue to work for electoral reform.

This was the short answer.

Best,

Edward

Edward,

I will also only give a synopsis of my experience
I have only lived in 5 continents so far and can only make myself understood in 4 languages (Chinese not being one of them, unfortunately)
and let me tell you living in another country feels great!!!
it is like you are on a holiday everyday! everything is fun and new!
the normal irritants become an adventure because it is done in a different language, a different setting and you don't know the outcome
quality of life is very subjective thing and usually relates to your personal health and wealth or family, not to the country as a whole
e.g. Mexicans love their country no matter how long they have lived here
yes there is a lot to be desired in this country, Spain is no walk in the park either! were you there during their fascist regime?

Ed,

thanks for the reasoned, educational and informative post. While I'll not go so far as Clancy, I do agree that this is an excellent way to reach out, to do exactly what you purport to achieve, and to make progress in these arenas.

Please don't misconstrue my questions (as you have done based on your quote, above) as disagreement with the content of your invective. My questions were largely based in confusion at the crudeness of your first inflammatory post, as, knowing you, and as evidenced by your "short answer", you are capable of eloquent discourse. I surmise that you were being intentionally crass, and gather a hint from your post that this is intended to shake it up a little, maybe to get some wiggle room in firmly entrenched people? Anyway, my thinking on the matter is that heading in through the emotions in that way leaves a huge battle to be fought before reason can come to play.

To clarify, I largely share the opinions you put forth, though from a less traveled, less studied viewpoint. Thank you for sharing your experience and the links, I'll reference them as my time and passion allows.

Sharp observation there, Royce! Most people never see it.

Yes, I was as you said: "...being intentionally crass," "...intended to shake it up a little," and "...to get some wiggle room in firmly entrenched people?"

Americans are on a VERY HIGH HORSE and they need to be knocked down from it because it's the only way they will listen. It's kind of like a cold bucket of water in an arrogant person's face or a rude awakening. I have tried my entire life to talk to people calmly about what's really going on in the world and that things are not the way they've been told by mommy and daddy since the were kiddies and it's time to grow up.

Americans' foolishness, innocence, unquestioned assumptions, and gullibility is why the U.S. government is able to lie to them so easily and pack them off to war in a moment's notice (WMD's that aren't there, "fight for democracy," hide the fact that it's the petroleum we are after, and ignore the fact that our Constitutional rights are intact without fighting in Iraq and the same people who insist that we need to invade other countries are precisely the same ones that are destroying our Constitutional rights and expanding phone taps without a judicial order!)

It is my experience that americans choose not to listen. Talking to them like adults is a waste of time because they are not adults. They don't think for themselves largely because they don't know how and because they are very infantile when it comes to domestic and foreign policy, blind faith in their government, and blind faith in religion.

I couldn't agree more, when speaking of the majority of the American population. Perhaps it's my naive idealism, but I tend to view our West County community in general, and the Wacco BB community in particular to be operating from different paradigm. Thus, I question the efficacy of posting in this particular style on this particular forum. Let's hop on over to the NRA site and post the same text, that should be fun!

Good reflection, Royce. Although you'd be surprised at how many of those closed minded folks were precisely from around here and the vicinities. You see, I grew up in Marin County and lived off and on in Sonoma County for many years. Although I have lived in different areas throughout my life, the locations where I lived for a year or more have been New York, Los Angeles (I'd have to ask my parents about that one because it was probably just under a year in the City of Angels), at least 19 years in Marin County, almost 12 years in Sonoma County, 10 years in Europe, and a few other years in different areas, all adding up to my present 46 years of life.

So, unfortunately, most knuckle-headed american attitudes that I have had the misfortune of coming face to face with came precisely from Marin and Sonoma County folks.

I like your idea of bashing a local NRA site, though! Want to join me?

Ok, I'd be willing to pull a "three musketeers" routine on the NRA fascists with you and Phiant.

Here is a piece (which expands on our previous conversation) that I wrote regarding one of the many Democrat's cave-ins to the Bush administration; in this case, the vote to continue funding the Iraq war. It is a response I had to a real right winger with thick, large blinders on. He and I enjoyed bashing the Democrats but from different perspectives and we agreed that they are basically spineless. But whereas he sees the Donkey Party as being naturally and inevitably without a backbone, I actually cut the Dems some slack (but not too much) precisely because of the electoral and two-party system we all suffer from (all but the rich, of course).

We bounced ideas off of each other regarding the "mandate" and "strategy" of the Democratic Party as a result of their unexpected wins in November of 2006 and what they really meant in the end (nothing).

Here it is:

On mandate: It's really difficult to speculate the will of the voters in a two party system but I don't think you are too far off the mark. There are still millions of americans, such as yourself, who support the war. Sure, most people who voted democrat probably feel strongly against the war like I do but the election results were not quite the landslide they needed to be in order to make the statement unequivocal. I felt it had been, as many others do but taking a closer look, the losses of the Republican Party needed to be even greater than they were. I should point out that the poor results the Republicans had last November were a surprise to most people and did state a demand for change. But how much change? That is the question. I know what your opinion is now but I wouldn't be so sure. I don't have the answers but like I said, in a two party system, it's really hard to guess. In a multi-party system (there would have to be proportional representation, not First-Past-the-Post as it is now) such a message would be much, much clearer because the Greens would get a percent, the Dems another, the Republicans another, the "Nationalist Party" another, the Liberals another, etc, etc. That would draw a far clearer picture regarding party platforms, their policies, and with few doubts.

But I digress. On the "why the Dems voted what they did" I think you made a good point with the 'strategy' observation you made. There are no easy choices facing the Dems in this situation and I will have to cut them some slack (but not too much) on their actions. If the 'strategy factor' is very serious one, then, in my opinion, that probably takes some of the edge off of the "spineless" factor. But who knows for sure. I know that with Kucinich there would be no doubt on the kind of foreign policy that he would map out. But it's Pelosi whose leading the Dems in the House and I don't see her as being a wimp. More progressive Representatives like Lynn Woolsey will have a slightly stronger position now as a result of these events.

I don't mind calling a spade and spade, especially when it comes to Republicans and Democrats, but I feel it's a little harder to judge the Dems now than it was at first glance. I believe that these issues have deeper faults. I feel that these problems are more systemic than they are a matter of leadership, ideology, party, number of seats, etc.

The point you made that the Dems' constituency holds different values is an important one. That's just one of many good reasons why a multi-party system would reflect people's wills much more accurately, because there are many different opinions. Other people say that a multi-party system would be dangerous but in reality what would happen is that people would finally have the opportunity to vote their conscience and, conversely, parties would be much freer to represent their constituencies' interests. The way the system is now, the two political parties have their hands tied in what they can say and do, and this is more true of the Dems than the Republicans because the Dems have to represent a far more diverse crowd. The implication with this idea is that if either party strays too far away from the center then they will be punished by "centrist" or "swing" voters who will vote for the other party.

But you did agree to some extent with my "spineless" accusation against the Dems?

Thanks again for your thoughts,

Edward

No No Lulu! They say: Curiosity killed the little pussy [probably from playing with it too much {you know with the extra large direct 220 volt pulsating duel action pearl multi rotation 32 speed clit simulation with anal adaptor vibrator kit}]! And I am so close to death I can taste it! I think it has become one of my favorite all time past times to find your true identity. Now I do have a few more but this one is definitely entertaining to no ends. I am closer than you think. I can probably drive to your house and peak in your windows, but that would take all the fun out of it! I want to peg you for whom you are and watch the expression on your face as I say “hey baby wanna fuck”!!!! Entertaining as it might be, invading one’s own privacy at one’s own home is just wrong and I won’t go that far. But you have to admit that this is about as revealing as you can get at times, remember I have every email you have sent from day one and just because you think you are getting better at deception, you have to go back to the beginning and really look at what you wrote and why. Makes it easier to go to the end and decipher the puzzle. When you do go to the beginning you will see you weren’t as clever back then, cause you where definitely less worried about any one trying to figure whom you might be! AS far as selling one’s soul, you could just come out of the closet and be done with it all! Thus popping my entertainment values and giving me less joy in my world. You know you like this idea, it gives you great pleasure to cause pain and suffering I can tell you little sadistic fuck! LMAO!

Now I may like to spank a little for enjoyment but I wonder what turns your head? AS sadistic as you are you must be a real fucking pervert in the bedroom? What do you like to do to your lovers? Hmmmmm should I be scared? Should everyone be scared to find out the true identity of the real LULU? The true and real fetishes of the person behind the iron pen. Now I would be more interested in finding you favorite color, your favorite book, your favorite flower [black rose of course]. I really don’t need to put a face to you, I can feel your every move from right where I sit, oh and you know where I sit! Cause I am not afraid of the dark. Are you this ashamed of whom you are that you really need to hide? Oh yeah back to you, not my own justification. I can feel what you might have in mind thus far, you will take every little bit of information I have wrote, break it down till it fits in your little shallow head and answer each piece as it was one individual statement like you alwayz do. Thus taking the fun and value out of everything everyone writes. Why do you do this? You are way brighter than this; I think it is because you are so shallow you can only comprehend one sentence at a time yes? Are you afraid if you write something in more than one thought pattern you will look the fool? I think this about you!

I think in due time you will be let out of your little cage and start sharing your life with all to bask in your own world, giving all the opportunity to help you grow. If you choose to remain in your deep little hole you will drown and nobody will ever reach you. I know you think you are a really deep individual [ROTFLMFAO] but really you are just about as deep as a low life guttersnipe on a cold night in Chicago! What I mean to say is I would much rather you write something that has value than the nit picking old lady syndrome you seem to be stuck in, evolution is more than just a word dude. IF you go back in time and read what I was writing form the beginning you will see what I am talking about, evolution!!!!!!!!! WE seem to have left you behind, where over here, over here!!!!! STILL LAUGHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I could go on forever, but I will let you catch your breath and get ready for your rebuttal! Take your time, I am on vacation and won’t be back on till tomorrow.

Oh BTW; isn’t she hot? Tink is even finer in person than in the pictures!!!! God I love that WOMAN! And she is all WOMAN, EVERY LITTLE BIT MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ed,

are you trying to censor the uncensored postings? How very conservative and American of you! Be careful, you just might get spanked, gang spanked in this current atmosphere! (which you'd probably enjoy :bootysh:_, if I know you at all)

Royce

topic? we don't need no stinking topics!

now Ed, I have noticed that you have done some censoring or deleting of posts.......................
is that your way of apologizing?

I admit that some of my posts may have been aggressive or disrespectful so I deleted a couple of them. If it's more appropriate for me to apologize then yes, I'm sorry (if my posts were offensive).

And Royce, yes, I might enjoy a spanking or two.

Does anyone have any extra american imperialist torturing flags laying around? I completely covered up my U.S. flags with my trips to the bathroom (to do a number 2) and I need more desperately.

Thank you,
