Last week we started hearing a quiet crow coming from our flock of hens. At first we thought is was a crowing hen (it can happen). As the days have passed, however, we've noticed Ruby is starting to look like a rooster.
She/He is a Rhode Island Red just under 5 months old. Pleasant temperment and quite handsome.
Anyone want a Rooster for your flock? This is not a stockpot chicken please.

I encourage you to keep Rubio. Red roosters are gentle and beautiful and if your girls don't have a guy around, one of them will take the job and begin crowing (you don't want to hear it) and mounting the other hens and NOT laying eggs herself.
However, you don't need a big guy like Rubio - a little bantam will do as well, though you won't get fertile eggs, necessarily. Smaller crow, less feed, and a dashing and chivalrous master of the flock, that's banty roosters.
Cheers,
D
