This is the series that HBO is touting to replace "The Sopranos". - SPOILER ALERT -
I just watched the premier episode. Did anyone else here see it?
I watched it because I'd seen the trailer where the surfer levitates a few inches off the ground. That was intriguing enough to get me to check it out. Well, that, and I'm going to need to find a replacement for my weekly Sopranos fix.
I actually watched the first episode twice - once on my own, and then again because my mate wanted to see it. I enjoyed it a lot more the second time around. The first time I watched it I had difficulty following the dialog & story line, because of the terrible wooden acting by all the major actors Rebecca DeMornay most especially. 1st episode freeze-up? Hope they get over it!
But the second time through I was able to pay more attention to the more subtle parts of the plot & characters. Of course, the most-immediately mysterious character is "John" from Cincinnati, who first appears in a field at the Mexican border, near San Diego, or, more accurately, Imperial Beach. (BY the way, that stadium in the background is La Playa Del Toros, in Tijuana).
The first thing we learn about John is that he has magic pockets. Anything anyone demands of him he produces from them - $50, $2300, a credit card. He appears ignorant of human interaction, like the alien visitor in "Starman". Is he an alien? Or maybe a messenger from....?
He bears cryptic messages - "Tom has to get back in the game". He apparently has some sort of extra-sensory perception, because he replies to people who talk to him from hundreds of feet away. He has a seeming gentle soul-meld with the surfer kid. "Jesus loves the little children..."
I just talked about "John" because he's in the title. But there's also that grandson surfer kid, who brought the bird back to life, and Tom, who levitates.
I'm planning to check out the second episode, to see if the plot continues to intrigue...and hopefully, the acting improves. My guess for episode two: Butch "The Beast" gets sober, and starts to re-connect with his son. Tom starts to re-connect with Butch. The gay lottery winner starts rebuilding the motel - possibly a future central plot location? One of the female characters hits on John, probably the clerk from the Yosts' board shop.
