I have never had hay fever or any allergies in my life, but this year I seem to be sneezing and my eyes are watering like mad. It's nothing awful like I've seen with some of my friends who are chronic sufferers, but has anyone else noticed allergy symptoms for the first time this year? Does it make you really tired too?

Sonoma County is one of the worst places in the world for Allergic Rhinitis. That's Hayfever in layman's term. Tons of pollen is produced here, Spring and early Summer, late Summer and early Fall. Our rich natural habitat is like Club Med for plants.

I am on maintenance desensitization shots, allopathic treatment, Allergy & Asthma Medical Group, Dr.'s Martin and Barron.

You'll get a lot of responses for naturopathic, TMC, Bee Pollen and other alternative treatments. Go for it if you want.

This topic has been thoroughly discussed on this board in the past, it's all in the archives.

Two things to keep in mind are:

Allergies can often only manifest in the late twenties and early thirties.

And, understanding the threshhold breach theory of allergic reaction is a usefull way to understand exposure, and the need to avoid the stressors that cause the immune system to overreact with excessive production of histamines when it senses a perceived threat.

And yes, allergic reactions are a form of, and cause of, stress. You get tired. Your body is working overtime to respond to a perceived stress from your environment and your immune system is overreacting, this requires energy, one of several results is tiredness.

Thanks, but I'm not looking for remedies, it's not that bad. I'm just wondering if I really do have hay fever for the first time in my 60 years and 30 of them here in Sonoma County.

Thanks for the link ....didn't know there was so much info here on allergies. I moved here a year ago and yep....hayfever has gone wild. Dr. Martin is great....I highly recomend him if you are suffering from allergies.

Sonoma County and specifically west county and the bowl -like valley around Sebastopol is also the worst for airborne mold. Last year-so rainy-was hell for me and I was somewhat relieved to hear that other people were experiencing dizziness as well as I. It sounds like you have more of the "dry" allergies such as allergic rhinitis. Also, the extreme changes in temperature--going from fog and cold to sun and high temps in one day aggravate immune system responses including arthritis and allergies. Good luck!

It's probably because we had such an extraordinarily dry, warm, and windy spring. I can't ever remember a Spring in California (been here since 77) where Winter just stopped in Early March and that was it....A bus driver commented the other day that the grape leaves are particularly large already and I'm not surprised...

I don't get them myself but had pretty severe rhinitus and mild asthma growing up. Started getting a little stuffed up 4 years ago with a full blooming yellow Acacia tree about 30 feet from my bedroom window. I did the holistic thing and symptoms were gone in 3 days, Anybody wanna know, email me but I'm sure there are lots of remedies on this forum....

Ah - so maybe that's why my joints are stiffer than usual too!
