Live oak leaves take forever to compost, and I'd like to dice them up. The Rental Place doesn't rent mulchers--only rents chippers. A quick Google search turns up mixed reviews on a string mulcher, sort of a weed-whacker in an enclosure. I use a push mower, so running over them with a power mower isn't an option.
Any recommendations?

Most chippers are actually chipper/shredders. I think running the leaves through the shredder would help, along with adding more "greens" to you compost pile.

I mulch leaves with my 6-horse mulching lawnmower. Trick is to spread the leaves out to a relatively shallow layer first. Works good on twigs & pulled weeds too, as long as they haven't gone to seed. Luckily, I have enough lawn area to make this an easy process. However, I wouldn't hestitate to push a strong (5+ horsepower) push mower into fresh piles of leaves. then just shovel them into your wagon, trailer, whatever.

Mulching leaves with my small electric mower seems quite easy. it doesn't take a lot of power unless they're unusually deep. Have been mulching them in place under a large Maple for a couple of years and now find the natural decay process turning the debris into fine brown compost.
