Hello fine Wacco community,
I have been trying to sell a 2000 Eurovan on Craigslist. I received an email inquiry, and provided the normal additional information you would expect someone to ask regarding the sale of a vehicle.

Then today I received an email saying 'Walter' had arranged the sale to a third party (name was given). If I provide my name and address, a cashier's check for the full amount including shipping (to where is still unknown), would be forthcoming. Including the name of the shipping contact.

This has to be some kind of a scam, am I too cynical? Is anybody in the know of what this is about, is it legitimate? How would I even go about verifying any of this?

Any insights would be appreciated.

email: [email protected]

thanks

Yes, it's a scam. Only deal with people in person, for cash.

You're definitely not too cynical...you have to be extremely cautious and suspicious of any proffered transactions like this these days (hey, I used a word from Seinfeld in a complete sentence!).

I have a photographer friend I've been posting ads for on another board and I've been amazed....almost all the responses have been scams, many from England (I'm not prejudiced I happen to be English myself....at least some of me is...). Many of these have indicated payments to be made by bank transfer but like Clancy says above....only accept cash if there is any thing odd about the deal at all.

Thanks both of you! Interestingly, this came from England also. You are so right in person, cash, only way to go.

Correct, this is a scam. As the Craigslist examples will show, the scammer will send you a cashier's check drawn from a "good" bank account that is subsequently closed before you cash the check; your bank puts the funds in your account, and then a few days later when the scammer's check bounces, your bank comes after you for the funds. Meanwhile, the scammer has your car...

Yes, that is a very common Craigslist scam. There is documentation about this on their website, and you can forward them the email you received so that they can use it for tracking purposes.
