At&t and/or Cingular phone unlocking?

I've been an At&T phone customer for years, and they got taken over by cingular, now back to at&t, it's coporate buffoonery of the highest order.

a result of this buffoonery is some incompatibility between older and newer phones, on the same network.

Anyone know the first thing about unlocking phones, getting them to talk to each other, use older / newer sim cards, etc?

All GSM phones here, just older blue at&t versus newer orange cingular sims (I understand the newest ones are blue and orange, and aren't compatible with either, sheesh)
