I just started another part time job and right now I only work Wed.'s from 9-12. I know for a fact that I have a problem with throwing myself into situations, then I become overwhelmed and that usually triggers me. I'll become stressed out and/or feel a bit panicked.

I only need 1-2 days at this job and then I'd be working 26-34 hours each week which would be perfect.

There's something else about this new job that I want to talk about because it bothers me. The full time counselors have regular meetings, every Wed. from 9-12. Yesterday I was covering this with another relief counselor. Well when I got there I didn't have any time to review the client's chart's or become familiar with their mental status/issues so I feel that I went in partially blind. I did get the basics from one of the therapists, however I feel that all the relief counselor should have there own meetings so that they can review the charts as well as gain further training. I could tell that the other gal who was working with me felt uncomfortable by the way she carried herself, plus she's 21 and when you're just starting out in this field it can be kind of scary. I know when I was 21 I wasn't feeling secure or comfortable with myself and new situations were intense.

Perhaps sitting back and just giving it time would be the best choice to make at this time.

Advice is tough with only a contextual concept of what you are actually doing. Can you provide more details within the framework of confidentiality which I infer would exist in a situation you describe?

My initial advice urgings go two directions, first toward the business/organization/institution format/detail side, next toward the youth vs experience, personal comfort, feeling side.

Your own advice about sitting back rings really true, I'd go with that for now, there's always time to learn, question, change, grow.

I just started another part time job and right now I only work Wed.'s from 9-12. I know for a fact that I have a problem with throwing myself into situations, then I become overwhelmed and that usually triggers me. I'll become stressed out and/or feel a bit panicked.

I only need 1-2 days at this job and then I'd be working 26-34 hours each week which would be perfect.

There's something else about this new job that I want to talk about because it bothers me. The full time counselors have regular meetings, every Wed. from 9-12. Yesterday I was covering this with another relief counselor. Well when I got there I didn't have any time to review the client's chart's or become familiar with their mental status/issues so I feel that I went in partially blind. I did get the basics from one of the therapists, however I feel that all the relief counselor should have there own meetings so that they can review the charts as well as gain further training. I could tell that the other gal who was working with me felt uncomfortable by the way she carried herself, plus she's 21 and when you're just starting out in this field it can be kind of scary. I know when I was 21 I wasn't feeling secure or comfortable with myself and new situations were intense.

Perhaps sitting back and just giving it time would be the best choice to make at this time.

Advice would be great.

Pick up a book at Copperfield's on EFT or thought field or Energy Tapping therapy, or you can go to emofree dot com, (Gary Craig's site...he's out in Gualala) and access it all there for free....very effective simple acu-tapping tool for the kind of discomforts you're describing. It addresses the inherent contradictory feelings experienced in that type of a situation.

And get some kava kava or a good herbal relaxing formula.....that helped me deal with the horsesh*t of my last job for years longer than I could have otherwise. WF's has that local companies extract wheel in their supp section....or get something at a more local enterprise.

Good luck...you'll probably do just fine...just being able to articulate and share your fears and your concerns should help you handle them a lot better.

Dear Jill, it sounds like you were "briefed" rather briefly and that that is not enough for you to feel comfortable in handling your job. While it probably isn't realistic or financially feasible for relief counsellors to have meetings to be up to date on cases, an orientation is usually offered and there are protocols in place (in the helping professions) re how part-timers are to be trained, case notes tracked, etc. If another week goes by without this orientation, then approach your supervisor nicely and let them know in a positive way, your concerns and ask for clear guidance on what, as a relief counsellor you do need to know to handle calls. The work you are doing can be emotionally demanding and at some point you may need to evaluate whether this is the right sort of work (since you tend to get stressed and panicked per your email)-for you. Advice is tough with only a contextual concept of what you are actually doing. Can you provide more details within the framework of confidentiality which I infer would exist in a situation you describe?

My initial advice urgings go two directions, first toward the business/organization/institution format/detail side, next toward the youth vs experience, personal comfort, feeling side.

Your own advice about sitting back rings really true, I'd go with that for now, there's always time to learn, question, change, grow.
