For those wanting to use their Web-based email (Yahoo!, Hotmail, Gmail etc.) as opposed to Outlook (or Mail for us Mac users), this extension works brilliantly!

Is it different from Thunderbird?
Yes. Thunderbird is a users computer-based email client. This extension makes it possible to bypass launching the computer's email (Outlook, Thunderbird, Mail) when clicking on an email link and use a Web-based email (my preference as it is easy to access my email from any computer) such as Yahoo!, Hotmail, Gmail etc.
Thanks,

Okay, I'm confused (not unusual).
I went to the link, downloaded the extension, and then when I went back to Mozzilla and tried to check my email, I got sent to Gmail to set up an account. I don't see (without some help from you, obviously), how to set it up to access my current mail (on Yahoo). Can you tell me what I've done wrong?
Thanks

No problem :-)
It's an easy fix -
By default, the extension uses Gmail. Changing it to Yahoo! is simply a matter of choosing it in the drop-down menu in the WebMailCompose Settings (here's some screen shots of what you're looking for - Mac version):

Looks 'bout the same on the PC, and thanks to you, it is all working perfectly.
So, what this means is that there isn't any need for Thunderbird at all, right? And, in fact, it avoids the problem of downloading email onto one computer and no longer having access to it on another. Yes?
Boy, sometimes I realize how little I actually understand how all of this is connected under the skin.

Bingo! :-)
What's nice about using a Web based email (I use Yahoo! Mail Plus - $20/year), is that you can access it from anywhere, not just at home. However, it used to be that storage on Yahoo! Mail was a puny 6MG so I would have to download my email about once a month just to make room (ugh...). Then storage became cheap (and Gmail hit the scene offering 2Gigs!), and everything changed.
With such huge storage capacity, Web based email really took off as a viable alternative to the desktop version. Seeing the "new frontier" I decided in April 2004 to make the switch to Yahoo! Mail Plus (https://mailplus.mail.yahoo.com/) and have been very happy with that product (so far I've used only 8% of my 2Gigs - and I get LOTS of email!). This extension just makes using Web mail that much better (later to Outlook!).

Well, I'm very pleased. I had been using Yahoo mail for a very long time, but had downloaded Thunderbird when I changed to Mozilla, not really understanding that difference between web-based and computer-based email. I'm glad to be able to go back and still have such easy access.
Thanks again, and keep those suggestions comin'

Actually my current query is whether you know how to get around my next hurdle. It appears that I am not able to format any outgoing messages in Yahoo Mail now that I am using Mozilla. I used to be able to italicize, underline, capitalize, etc., but no more. Any hints? I do see that they mention in their (Yahoo's) help section that "color and graphics" are only available to clients using Internet Explorer. What do you do to get around this?

I'm something of a browser poweruser, and I spend alot of time online. I recently switched from Opera, which is a very features-rich browser, to Firefox. In order to get the capabilities I needed, I had to hunt through a bunch of extensions and identify the ones that worked for me. I'm appending a list, FYI. You can probably find most of these with Google, or at:
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/?application=firefox
adblock: blocks online advertising
All-in-One_Gestures: mouse gestures, highly configurable
allowrightclick: allows you to use the right-click menu even on website that try to prevent it
bugmenot: automatically fills in login information for many sites with free registration required (e.g. New York Times)
downbar: provides progress bars for downloaded files at the bottom of the window; less obtrusive than the download window
imagezoom: zoom images
paste_and_go: highlight text on a page, and then search for that text from the right click menu
reloadevery: automatically reloads the page on a specified interval (you turn it on when you want it)
sage: nice RSS feed reader
searchbox_autoupdater: Makes sure that the searchbox in your browser toolbar contains the same terms that were present in the last Google search window you used. Very useful in conjunction with the next item
searchwp: Causes a list of your currently active search terms to appear in your navigation bar. Clicking on a term jumps to that term in the page. Also, clicking on the highlighter icon makes all appearances of the search term highlight on the page (like Google's cache)
sessionsaver: save and restore a set of tabs or windows
smoothwheel: Makes the mousewheel scrolling smoother, particularly on slower Macs
TabMixPlus: additional options for tabbed browsing
Thanks, Brent !!!
After I try to convince my dogs that I haven't totally abandoned them to play with this computer, I'll go back to checking out all this wonderful new information.

If Yahoo! says that you have to use IE for "color and graphics," then you probably have to until they say otherwise. Unfortunately, FireFox is still dwarfed by IE in terms of browser market share and so there are Web sites that have areas that only render in IE (though the momentum behind FireFox is phenomenal having already been downloaded some 93 million! times in it's short life). You might try posting your question to Mozillazine (https://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=38&sid=b960673fa6b07c1247506f9c719f1c5a) too and see what the experts there have to say - if anybody knows, it's probably somebody there.

Hey Bob, do you recommend updating to Firefox 1.7?
Absolutely! There was a security breach which has just been patched in 1.0.7 - you can read about it here:
