PLEASE, PLEASE FORWARD!

May 28, 2007

Driven by economic inequality, thwarted by ill-conceived US border policy, and ignorant of the harsh conditions of the Sonoran Desert, more than 2000 men, women, and children have died trying to cross the Mexican border into the United States since 1998.

For the second summer in a row, I will be volunteering for the organization No More Deaths. The organization and its volunteers are committed to saving the lives of migrants that are crossing the United States – Mexico border.

We do so by offering medical attention, food, and water to migrants who are crossing the border. Often these people have been walking for 10-20 miles in desert temperatures of over 100 degrees. One hundred percent of the people we encounter are dehydrated and have various levels of deteriorating health.

We believe that every life is valuable and that with humanitarian aid, we can make a difference.

I invite you to learn more about the organization. If you are interested in hosting a donation drive, I would love to present a slide show of my experience last year. It could be a group of 5 or 6 in your living room or 50-100 at your organization, church, or workplace. I typically give a talk/slide show for 30 minutes and then a whole lot of question and answer time.

I ask all of those who attend to bring a donation. I will personally deliver the donations this July when I go to volunteer. Please see the list below for donations most in need. We are especially looking for socks and first aid items for severely blistered feet and of course cash donations to buy many of the things on the list that are not donated.

Thank you in advance for your help! See you soon!

With Compassion,

I'm hoping to start an informative landslide here, and please bear with my uninformed opinions on the matter, but your post leaves me wondering why you are picking this particular windmill to joust at? Yes, of course, every life is sacred. Yes, of course, any aid we can give to our fellow human is blessed.

Yet, these folks who are crossing the desert are doing so out of choice. A hard choice, yet a choice.

2000 people died on the border in the last 9 years? How many have died INSIDE the border, in our slums and our cities, of malnutrition, homelessness, dis-ease, not to mention the malnutrition and body unconsciousness foisted off on them by and perpetuated by the corporate theocracy?

How many people have died TODAY in Iraq, or in other conflicts around the world? How many people have died in the last month from tobacco or alcohol abuse? Child abuse? Spousal abuse? Murder? Extreme sports?

How many died in the aftermath of Katrina? of other natural disasters which were responded to ineffectively because our national resources are being squandered in a for profit expansionist zeal?

With so many injustices, what is it about this particular one which mirrors your process, and thus catches your heart strings motivating you to action?

With a sincere curiosity,

Royce
