Erykah is an American neo-soul, R&B/hip-hop artist whose work crosses over into jazz. She is best known for her singles “You Got Me,” a collaboration with The Roots, and the award-winning “On and On,” in 1997. Influenced as a child by singers such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Chaka Khan, her all-time favorite artist, Erykah was singing on the local radio by the age of fourteen. Some music journalists have labeled her neo soul, often comparing her to Billie Holiday in lyrical delivery and grouping her with D’Angelo in musical genre. She has performed with roots, reggae musician and singer Burning Spear. She weaves unusual musical influences together to create her rich texture of sound.

Though he maintains a significant underground following, in recent years he has gained notable mainstream success. His latest album ‘Be’ was nominated in 2006 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album. Common is currently working on his seventh LP, Finding Forever, featuring works with Kanye West, Dr. Dre and Djuan Edgerton. The album will be released on July 10th 2007.

Formed by high school friends in Philadelphia in the mid 80’s, The Roots have grown into an influential, Grammy winning hip-hop group; famed for their heavily jazzy sound and live instrumentation. Inspired by the “hip-hop band” concept, The Roots have garnered critical acclaim and influenced a whole generation of later hip-hop and R&B acts. The band tours extensively, and their live sets are frequently hailed as the best in the hip-hop genre. Recently, the band played a concert in NYC’s Radio City Music Hall with Common, Nas, Talib Kweli and Big Daddy Kane. The Roots have been featured in three movies: Dave Chappelle’s Block Party; Spike Lee’s Bamboozled and Marc Levin’s “Brooklyn Babylon.” In 1999, the Roots won a Grammy for the best rap performance by a duo/group—“You Got Me” featuring Erykah Badu). And in 2007, they won Max Stevenson’s International Hip-Hope Award for their ‘Game Theory’ album.
