I was puzzled and disappointed by the Press Democrat's naive and timid opinion about pot clubs - specifically in reference to pot club application denials in Petaluma and Healdsburg. The May 9 PD editorial, titled "Pot Problems" said that, "until a system is established to dispense medical marijuana safely and legally, cities should focus on more reliable methods of increasing tax revenues".
Someone please inform the editors at the PD that there already is a safe system for distributing medical marijuana - pot clubs.
Hint to Barnett and Swofford - it's not about taxes. Oh, we shouldn't allow any clubs to be opened, because 6 years ago one police officer in Petaluma was shot. Editors - I had a friend who was a security person at the Windsor Wal-Mart. He was shot in the leg by a shoplifter. Using the PD's editorial "logic", we should be busily about closing down all Wal-Marts in the area.
The PD misses the larger picture completely, how disappointing! Pot clubs address a health need and at the same time are a form of passive disobedience to wrong laws. The PD's suggestion is that we just wait until marijuana can be dispensed "legally". Bright idea editors! How long do you think that'll take - 50 - 100 years?
I'm thinking we need more enlightened editors, and send the PD's editors someplace else, maybe Kansas or Mississippi, where they'd be more in tune with the local sentiment.
