Finding a culture locally can be challenging if you don't have a friend willing to give you a baby culture. However, if you are just getting into brewing you might be better off ordering a "starter kit" from a good online supplier. The quality is usually great and the accompanying liturature will help tremendously. Try www.organic-kombucha.com , they got me started off great!
By the way, I'm not brewing right now, or else I would give you a culture myself. Best of luck !!!

You can start Kombucha from some kombucha that you buy at the store.
Start with a jar of plain (unflavored with juice or other flavors) kombucha.
Brew some very strong black tea - I used four tea bags for 1 quart of spring water. Add 1/4 cup of sugar. It's easier to add the sugar when it's still warm. Brew the tea for several hours.
Mix equal parts of the brewed tea (room temperature) with room temperature kombucha in a glass container with a cheese cloth cover. Place in a warm, dark place and leave undisturbed. You should grow a baby in about 2 weeks.
I've brewed alot of kombucha and you can vary the recipie as you like.
Good luck
