The Graton Day Labor Center would like to invite community members to
participate in the building of the center due to open in May (after 7 years' effort)

A professional crew is doing concrete work, building bathrooms, and renovating a classroom inherited from Harmony School.

VOLUNTEERS (day labors and other community members) are needed for building:

- WOODEN FENCE (beginning Saturday 4/28)

- DECK

- SIGN

- REPLACING FLOORING

- PUTTING UP LIGHTS and

- LANDSCAPING

Saturday, April 28, is the first volunteer work day - we will be staring work on the wooden fence.

PLEASE JOIN US.
Call Terry Winter at 823-1626 to sign up for this Saturday, or for other work to follow in the coming weeks.

Thank you!

Is it just me or is there something ironic about a day labor center
needing volunteer labor?

You'd think there would be an abundance of those who would benefit from
it's creation lining up to build it.

There actually is a point of diminishing returns in the more hands make
light work philosophy.

Royce I am in agreement with you as to irony...I didn't type tho, I just laughed a good full one...and what does this ad imply regarding the capabilities of their laborers?! Am always on alert for the ludicrous...I wish them ease and speed in the completion of the project, and give thanks for the morning laugh. Mindy

Graton had a year-long concensus process a few years ago that brought the community closer together and resulted in a set of shared agreements between the 20 community stakeholders including day laborers. The Graton Day Labor Center invites community participation - because it's more fun and it's what makes us all strong. Especially needed in this next month are volunteers with specialized professional skills; experience in various areas that young workers may not have. I see why you saw an irony. However, the day laborers are lucky these days to get 2 paid jobs/week. And yes, they are very much involved in all aspects of the center and eager to build and landscape it and get off the street - but if they get a paid job on Saturday they probably shouldn't give it up to volunteer. --Merrilyn

The day laborer center is a service that the land-owning citizenry is creating in order to put an end to the legacy of injustices that we have heaped upon those less privileged members of our community who have traveled from afar to pick our food, build our houses, clean up our messes, etc. They do this for a few hundred cents a day, with no job security, no health coverage, and often without anywhere decent to lay their heads at night, nor cook their own food. So it is only right and proper that we expect the labor center to be built with volunteer effort from the more privileged community members.
