Last year we were able to place an aussie pup through this group and I have been asked to try and help a backyard mate of that puppy now.
Nemo is a 5-year old 'fixed' Dalmation mix in Cotati. He was abandoned by his teenage owner years ago (3 I think) and has been living a life primarily chained to a structure in his backyard. He is primarily white with a few black spots, he is huskier than most other Dalmations I have seen (but that could be his sendentary lifestyle) I am told he is good with other dogs and kids.
The new sense of urgency is the family is selling their home and will be renting (but don't know where/when/how). No one in the family has any emotional connection to Nemo but don't want him to go to the pound, but also dont know what to do with him. The father has said "If he would just run away and stay away that would be one thing...but he just comes back"
I know there has to be something better out there for him. If you know of anyone who has room for one more lost soul, this guy needs the help

Thanks for your good work, Karen. I have a couple of questions and a comment. Comment: what is wrong with the "pound" if it is a no-kill shelter and/or he will be evaluated for placement? Nemo has led a deprived life and he needs some kind of evaluation to help understand where he will best fit in. It would be a tragedy if he were adopted and could not make it. A question I have is regarding whether he has deafness or has been tested for this. I don't know you Karen and so I apologize in advance if you are a skilled adoption worker. I just want to be sure that I and other Wacco readers have all the information we need and that this rescue follows rescue protocols that will indeed bring a home to Nemo. I guess the "pound" comment sent a red flag. I appreciate your taking time to explain. Many thanks.

No apology necessary. I’m not an adoption worker, merely a friend of the seemingly only responsible party at the house, the 20 year old daughter-- sister of the teenage ‘owner’.
Last year this older sister finally put her foot down regarding the mistreatment of a younger dog held by ‘younger sister’. I would guess there are several on the board who remember little Rabbit and will be heartened to know she went to a private party, and friend of a Wacco member, who treats her like gold.
Because Wacco was successful in placing the younger pup ‘older sister’ is again asking for help because, as I mentioned in the first post 1. Her dad is being forced to sell his home and will be in a renting situation 2. No one has the time or inclination to care for this dog.
Let me preface the following information with the fact that I don’t know this dog personally, so my information may not be complete. However according to ‘older sister’ Nemo has been with the family for 3-4(?) years and is about 5 now. He was ‘rescued’ from the pound (and when she said that I’m not sure which ‘pound’ she was referring to; county, the one in Rohnert Park or somewhere else) after having been adopted out at least twice before -- all before he was 1 ½. She understands he was returned to the pound because he was “too much energy.” Older sister is just beginning to look for possible options for this dog but believe the ‘pound’ is a kill shelter so doesn’t want him to go there, plus she’s like to see him go to SOME ONE rather than an institution. Tacitus and Mary Quinn (all aboard rescue) have already suggested the Dalmatian rescue in Sacramento as a possibility and I have forwarded that information to her.
I do not believe Nemo has been tested for deafness but also don’t think the family has ever been suspicious of his ability to hear. The father on the other hand believe the dog tries to make him angry by going potty in the sun room (wintertime, pre-leash in the backyard days) so he may or may not have housetraining issues. My (uneducated) guess is he is so bored/anxious/ignored, and has no ‘job’ he is showing a few behavioral issues.
So that’s the long and short of it. Please let me know if you have any other questions and/or suggestions for us
