Ideas about the "troll" topic from Waccotalk. Didn't want to comment on it more there, as the whole thread seems to've devolved into a gripefest with a few different subjects. I don't recollect ever reading posts by the person who's the subject of the thread. But I have some ideas about the subject in general.
I suggest you set up a separate forum to use for instances where people get into namecalling, character slams, or general nonsense posts, etc. I totally do not understand people who do that stuff. But it seems there's a significant portion of online people who actually enjoy it. Why not set up a forum for them, so other people who hate the inherent negativity aren't bothered by it?
It might also make life easier for you as operator/moderator. If someone continually behaves obnoxiously, bothering other members & possibly even driving some off, you don't have to go through the laborious process of seeking a vote as to whether or not they should be expelled. Just transfer their post to the nonsence forum & let them spew.
I participate on forums all over the web, and have noticed that a good portion of them offer a "nonsense/flamers'" forum. Seems to make life easier for those board operators.
