...growing in my garden??? Or is there a poisonous look alike??? How do I ensure they are coming back next year? Can I move them? They are growing between concrete pavers in my work area.
Thanks for your advice in advance -

Growing up in this area as a child, once a year a whole family would be taken out by eating mushrooms that looked like they were good to eat. This still happens once in a while. You really shouldn't eat any mushrooms that you don't know about! EVER! There are mushrooms so poisonous around this area; they really are the most deadly things we have. More deadly than Black Widows or Rattlers. The mushrooms are really the things to look out for in Northern California!:hmmm:

There are experts in this community...right?
Charmoon... aren't you a mushroom hunter? I actually don't know why I think that, but I am sure there is a reason....?Big Smile
Anyway I agree with Mykil. DO NOT EAT THE MUSHROOMS!!!

Charmoon here...yes, I know most of the local edible mushrooms, and it is morel season here, now. I talked to Barbara, she is emailing me a picture to make a positive identification. It is true you should never eat an unknown mushroom, but also true that you can learn which are safe, and which are poisonous. It's a great hobby! Mushroms should not be feared, just treated with respect. They are fascinating! To learn more, join SOMA, the local mushroom club (somamushrooms.org), or join up with one of my Wild About Mushrooms events (wildaboutmushrooms.net).
And if you think you see morels somewhere, I'm happy to confirm it for anyone. They are the best flavor on the planet! 829-2063.

If the mushrooms in question are morels, yes, it is safe to eat them. They do need to be cooked as morels have some toxins that are easily broken down by heat. I also know of at least two kinds of "false morels" that grow in the same habitat in our area. Although both kinds are eaten by adventurous mycophiles who occasionally get cases of gastrointestinal upset, neither cause death or other serious problems. I wouldn't eat them though.
Morels are one of the easiest mushrooms to identify. Compare yours to photos featured on the Mykoweb site (https://www.mykoweb.com/) and see if that's what you have. Better yet, ask a member of SOMA (Sonoma Mycological Association) if you know any. You could even join SOMA and start going to their meetings where they will be happy to identify almost any mushroom you care to bring in.
Morels are great sauteed in a little butter, on English muffins with poached egg, topped with Hollandaise sauce. Yum!

Thank you one and all for your advice and recipes. I harvested and ate the big one and am still here to tell the tale. Now I will research how to care for/move? my very own little morel patch [signed up for Charmoon’s workshop at Harmony, joined SOMA]. :smooch: Barbara
