ACTION ALERT: SB 658 - Letters to Governor Needed ASAP
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The California Legislature has passed SB 658, the Coastal Environment Motor Vehicle Mitigation Program. Thank you to the many organizations who have shown their support throughout the legislative process.

However, a huge task is before us in persuading the Governor to sign the bill. Please respond quickly to this request as decisions are likely to be made soon by the Governor's office. Please immediately do the following:

1. Send a letter of support for the bill directly to the Governor's office. Unfortunately, we cannot simply forward the letters prepared for the legislature — NEW LETTERS to the Governor MUST be submitted.

2. Encourage your board members and associates to send a letter. Forward this request to your colleagues. Letters from individuals or organizations with business interests or affiliations are especially needed.

3. If you or your associates have any contacts with Secretary Terry Tamminen or other members of the Governor's office, please contact them and let us know!!!

The sheer number of letters we can submitted are going to count a great deal. So, if possible, send one from your organization, your board members can also send ones as individuals or with other hats they wear, and so forth.

Please "pull out the stops" on getting letters to the Governor's office ASAP — as well as making direct contact with the Governor's staff! SB 658 represents the only bill of substance to get out of the legislature this year that can benefit land conservation. Together, we have a chance to generate up to $112 million per year for California's Coastal and Bay Area counties.

A one-page fact sheet and a sample letter of support for SB 658 have been attached to this email. For the Governor, please emphasize the following points:

• Local Control -- counties can choose to participate in the program -- let the counties choose

• California's coasts are an important economic engine for the state -- this bill will help keep the coast and ocean attractive for tourists, jobs, and businesses

• Full benefits of the fees generated by each county return to that county

• For counties that choose to participate, the fee is equivalent to buying a few extra gallons of gas each year

Please address your letter to:
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA 95814

If possible, copies should also be sent to the following four individuals:

Terry Tamminen
Cabinet Secretary
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA, 95814

Richard Costigan
Legislative Secretary, Office of the Governor
State Capitol, First Floor, E-15
Sacramento, CA, 95814

Secretary Mike Chrisman
California Resources Agency
1416 Ninth Street #1311
Sacramento, CA, 95814

Secretary Alan Lloyd, Ph.D.
California Environmental Protection Agency
1001 I Street
P.O. Box 2815
Sacramento, CA, 95812-2815

Thank you very much for your help on this bill so far and your response to this request. Feel free to contact me directly with any questions about SB 658 or this request for support.
