Hi Everybody,

I thought I would start writing an occasional column of WaccoBB.net news and share some of my thoughts about this adventure in community. So I'll be posting to this thread from time to time. Your comments are welcome!

So to start with, how about the new system? Not bad, huh? :curtsey: Besides being a whole bunch prettier, it introduced various bits of technology, the most profound of which is various controls that lets you control what you see and what you don't. As the community becomes ever larger this will be increasingly important. Now you can sip from the fire hose! It also lays the ground work for many future features, such as the ability to offer sub-communities their own private category!

I want to thank the first group of :angelsmilie: Supporting Members :angelsmilie: including:
Sahara Chaldean (Truenaturespresents (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/member.php?do=getinfo&u=895))
Judy Dragon (wisedragonlady (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/member.php?u=340))
Kathleen Springer (cjshomeopathy (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/member.php?u=3174) )
Amara Rose (cocreator (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/member.php?u=324) )
Peggy Saltzman (psaltz (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/member.php?u=450))I urge you to please join them in offering your support so I can continue to provide this great service to our community. I really need to get some bucks coming in, folks. Lots of you have told me how much you appreciate WaccoBB.net. Now's the time for you to show that appreciation! And if you sign up this month, you'll get a renewable subscription for 14 months instead of 12!

Just Added: More New Features!

To start off with, you can now make you own little sign like the one above! Just highlight some text in your post and click this guy: https://www.waccobb.net/forums/waccobb/buttons/sign.gif on the tool bar! [-]Censoring[/-], er, I mean strikeout is also available. There's lots more coming. I've got one coming in the next few days that many of you are really gonna like!

I've included my introductory post below because it wasn't included in many of your digests Sunday night. If you haven't read it yet please do so!

Welcome to the new WaccoBB.net!

The original WaccoBB.net website was sort of an extended proof-of-concept exercise. With almost 3,800 members I hereby declare it a success! Now here's the real website!

Let me start by affirming our mission: To facilitate and enhance the sense of community, both online and in person, for people in Sonoma and Marin counties who share our values of personal growth and healing, respect for others and the environment, and celebration!

Here are some of new features that I think you will appreciate:

Subscription controls
Now you can easily "roll your own" with these handy controls:
Easily select which categories you want email for on the home page
Easily select which threads you want email for on the category listing page and on thread display page. This overrides the category subscription.
Easily remove a thread from your digest

Change all your category subscriptions to the same level (here (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/profile.php?do=editvacationhold))
Vacation Hold to temporarily stop all email (here (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/profile.php?do=editvacationhold))Posting
Better support for pasting in formatted text
Attachments go out in the digest and individual emails
Attachments are easily embedded in the body of your post (video demo coming)

Automatic spell checking in Firefox (which would have caught my typo in my earlier posting!)

Resizable posting window that remembers your setting
Private replies go out as nicely formatted HTML And there's lots more! I'll be posting to highlight other new features from time to time. See what cool features you discover!

Since its now easy to unsubscribe to categories, if you are subscribed for email updates of the General Community category, I've also subscribed you to the WaccoTalk (discussion) and WaccoReader (forwarded items) categories which were left out of your original default subscription.

There has been a very interesting discussion of the Law of Attraction (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=14840) raging in the WaccoTalk category that you might want to tune into (You can catch up by going to the website, or tune it out by using the thread subscription control).

Supporting Membership
WaccoBB.net has been a labor of love and service for me over the past few years. I've been working on maintaining and enhancing this system full time now for over a year. It's now time for it to become my vocation as well.

I need your support now! Please become a Supporting Member! Basic membership is just $2/month ($24/year) which is about what one organic avocado costs and less then one movie rental! If you are reading this, a month of WaccoBB.net is surely worth it!

Supporting Members will get some extra features such as:

Signatures
Avatars
Custom user titles
Profile picture
More attachment space
Posting to the calendar
Create polls
Buddy and Ignore list

First crack at WaccoSpecials (more about this later)

And most importantly, good karma! As an introductory special, if you sign up by April 1st (no foolin'!) you'll get 2 months extra! You can also use the automatic monthly installment plan for just $2.50/month. Trades and other forms of help will also be considered. You can think of it as dana (https://www.spiritrock.org/display.asp?pageid=108&catid=2), gifting, or just doing your share to support this community resource. I am hoping that supporting member contributions will make up the majority of the support for this site.

Commercial memberships will be required for users who use WaccoBB.net to market their business, workshop, class or event. Commercial memberships start at just $6/month. There are a variety of other commercial membership options (here (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/payments.php)). I think it's only fair if you are using WaccoBB.net to make money, that you share just a bit with us. There will be a grace period until April 1st, but I do hope you'll sign up soon. Selling your own stuff (not purchased for resale) or offering rental housing does NOT require a commercial membership. Benefit events are also excluded. TRADES ARE WELCOME!

I realize that it is not always clear if a post is intended to financially benefit you (or a friend or family member) or if you are just passing on something you want to share with the community. This will be implemented on an honor system. I ask you to accept the principle that if there is a financial motivation or interest, that you acknowledge us as your business partner with your commercial membership.

Please see the various plans on the new Membership Page (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/payments.php) on your User Control Panel.

As part of our giving back to the community, we will continue to accept Public Service banners from the community as well.

Now that this part is done, I will be hosting more community events, including trainings and socials, as part of our mission to further develop community. The first training will be this Wednesday evening in Sebastopol. Click here (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=18584) for details.

This has been a big undertaking and I could not have done it alone. I want to thank several people who have volunteered a significant amount their time to make this possible. First ,Bill Bannant has been helping out keeping on eye the day's posts and addressing many of the issues that arise. Analy High School student, Shelby Munsch, has helped out with some of the HTML programming. And Ron Rozewski and Leila Rand have helped with the graphics. And Lorrie is to thank for our incredible smilie collection! There have many others that have pitched in here and there. Thanks to all of you!

And a big thanks to all you members, both posters and lurkers. If it weren't for you there wouldn't be anything here! Just a few of the members that come to mind are Larry Robinson for selecting inspiring Poems (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=13674), Mad Miles for his movie reviews (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=17471) and commentary, Dixon, our resident curmudgeon, and Suzanne for her writing tips (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=14874). Thanks also to many others who have taken time to generously and eloquently share their thoughts with us.

My deepest appreciation goes to my sweetheart, Linda (aka Mrs. Wacco (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=13737)). All this would not have happened without her unceasing faith, inspiration and wisdom. Thanks, Darling!

There are many more features coming that will both make WaccoBB.net easier and enrich the community experience. I welcome your comments and suggestions.

In Gratitude,
Barry

Upgrade glitches (cont'd)

Digests for users with usernames that begin with K-L and O-S did not receive digests last night. They went out this morning starting 10:40 am and covered the prior 24 hours, so there as some posts that were missed and some will be duplicated in tonight's (hopefully) standard digest. Please check the website (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/index.php)to see all posts. You can use the New Posts options on the left side menu to see recent posts across all categories.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Barry,

Thank you for your work. This is a great alternative from some of the larger online boards. Sebastopol and west county are special places with a need for our own space to communicate. I will send you a donation today.

Hi Everybody,

I'm still working out some kinks in the new system... Some users didn't get the Digest in the first part of week, and the run last night didn't work, but I got fixed up for a early morning delivery. I'm hoping it is now stable.

The Search button now support quoted phrases and works faster!

I recently posted some thoughts (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?p=25639#post25639) about what is to be "conscious".
I'll be offline this weekend and Monday as I take some time to recharge with Mrs. W. up at Harbin :bathtime: :treehugger:
Waccoteer Bill Hannant will be standing in for me. Thanks Bill!

Tip of the Day

It's now very easy to unsubscribe from a thread and prevent a raging discussion from clogging up in your digest again. Just click on the new https://www.waccobb.net/forums/waccobb/orangebuttons/UnsubscribeFromThread.jpg button!

Hi Everybody,

I'm back from Harbin and I've got lots of news for you!

Repost button!

You can now repost your post with a single click! If your post is old enough that it can be reposted and there are no replies, you'll see a new https://www.waccobb.net/forums/waccobb/orangebuttons/custom_repost.gif<v:shapetype id="_x0000_t75" coordsize="21600,21600" o:spt="75" o:preferrelative="t" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" filled="f" stroked="f"> <v:stroke joinstyle="miter"> <v:formulas> <v:f eqn="if lineDrawn pixelLineWidth 0"> <v:f eqn="sum @0 1 0"> <v:f eqn="sum 0 0 @1"> <v:f eqn="prod @2 1 2"> <v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"> <v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"> <v:f eqn="sum @0 0 1"> <v:f eqn="prod @6 1 2"> <v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"> <v:f eqn="sum @8 21600 0"> <v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"> <v:f eqn="sum @10 21600 0"> </v:f> <v:path o:extrusionok="f" gradientshapeok="t" o:connecttype="rect"> <o:lock v:ext="edit" aspectratio="t"> </o:lock><v:shape id="_x0000_i1025" type="#_x0000_t75" alt="" style="width: 36pt; height: 12pt;"> <v:imagedata src="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CBarry%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtml1%5C01%5Cclip_image001.png" o:href="https://www.waccobb.net/forums/waccobb/orangebuttons/custom_repost.gif"> </v:imagedata>button on the bottom of your post (when you are viewing your post on the website). This has the same effect as if you reposted it as a new thread. It gets sent out in the Daily Digest and Individual Emails and it goes back to the top of the category list on the website.

You are welcome to first edit<v:shape id="_x0000_i1026" type="#_x0000_t75" alt="" style="width: 22.5pt; height: 12.75pt;"> <v:imagedata src="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CBarry%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtml1%5C01%5Cclip_image002.png" o:href="https://www.waccobb.net/forums/waccobb/orangebuttons/edit.gif"> </v:imagedata>your post and then repost it so the new version goes out instead. </v:shape>So all of you with recurring events can just change the dates and edit in any other changes and then Repost it!

Note that your original post will no longer exist. For commercial members, reposting a commercial post counts as another post towards your monthly allotment of commercial posts.</v:shape></v:path></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:formulas></v:stroke></v:shapetype>

Guideline Change

I have tweaked the guideline (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?p=1503#post1503) for reposting to allow events to be reposted the week before the event if it's been at least a week since it was last posted. I think this strikes a good balance between getting the info out and not being deluged. Here's the new guideline:

2) REPOSTING: Rental Posts to the Housing/Offices category and Services Needed posts (when you want to hire somebody) may be reposted weekly. Events may be reposted after 7 days if the event is less than 7 days away. All other posts may be reposted after 14 days. This applies across all categories (You may not repost to a different category any sooner). In order to help you know when you can repost, I've changed the system to display the number of days ago when the post was made rather than "1 week ago". Note that the new Repost button will be available on Event posts after 7 days but it should not be used unless the event is less than 7 days away or you last posted 14 days ago.

RSS Feeds by Category
If you use a customized website that collects information from various sources, such as my.Yahoo or a customized Google homepage, you can now add selected categories from WaccoBB.net!

You can get upto 30 posts from each category along with the first line or so of the post. Clicking on the post title will take your directly to that post on WaccoBB.net. Just click on the new https://www.waccobb.net/forums/images/misc/rss.gif buttons. Here's an introduction to RSS (https://ezinearticles.com/?RSS-For-Dummies&id=83300). Please post any questions you may have in the Help Desk category (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=14).

Digest

Categories in the Daily Digest are now sorted in the same order as the website. There is also better support for attached Images.

I have declared a goal of 120 new Supporting Members each month. So far this month 58 members have signed up. Clearly you appreciate WaccoBB.net (since you are reading this!). Hi Everybody,

It's been a while since I've checked in. Life has been very full lately!

First off I want to thank everybody for all your support, especially all the supporting members! We're off to a good start! It feels great to offer this service to the community and actually earn some bucks! And your sweet notes of appreciation and support have been very touching!

As you may have noticed, I am looking for an assistant moderator (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=20807), to help me run the site to allow me to devote more of my energy to make the site even easier to use and facilitate more community interaction.

Thanks to Ron Rozewski for coming up with a couple of Wacco Smilies! :WaccoRays:

If you are not a supporting member yet, please join the new members below in supporting this community service (that apparently you use!). Basic non-commercial membership is just $2/month (about the price of one organic avocado!). See all the membership options here (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/membership.php).

Hump...yes you did forget me ...one of the first so you told me...so much for true love:hmmm: :hmmm: Macy, Macy, Macy...

I would never forget you! :here:

Indeed you were among the very first to sign up, even before I had asked! :angelsmilie:

Anyway...I also realized I have no idea when I signed up and wondered what you do about letting people know about when there RENEWAL is up??

MacyBless you, again, Macy! Thanks for bringing that up! You can check your current membership term on the Membership Page (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/membership.php) of your User Control Panel.

Two days before your membership ends you'll get an email notifying of that. If you signed up with a recurring subscription via PayPal (our preferred payment method!) it will be automatically renewed before it expires. You can cancel your recurring subscription at any time via PayPal. If you have paid by check, please go to the Membership Page (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/membership.php) of your User Control Panel to see the current membership options and renew it via PayPal (and save us both some hassle!) or snail mail in a check for your selected membership level.

In either case, if you renew before your membership expires, as you did, Macy dear, your membership will be extended for a full term at the end of your current term. If instead you are moved to send in an extra bit of gratitude :thanks:there is also an option on the Membership Page (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/membership.php) for that or please note that on your check.

Thanks again for your support Macy, as well as all the other Supporting Members, and to those of you who will sign up soon!

Hi Everybody,

I'm back from 2 days at the wonderful Sustainable Enterprise Conference (https://www.sec2007.com/) and inspired by the creative thinking and solutions being offered to help slow climate change. I've noticed how our members are taking up that challenge and, among other things, are posting for rideshares more frequently. So I have set up a separate category for Rideshares (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=102) to help facilitate this community building initiative.

Please consider giving your fellow Waccovian a lift and the atmosphere a break!

Yesterday's (Wednesday, May 9) Daily Digest was delayed. Sonic.net changed the configuration of their servers which killed the Digest!

Sonic.net's great tech support, and in particular Hoai-An who happens to be a Waccovian!, helped me find the problem this morning. So the Digest will be making its way to you over the next couple of hours. It still only contains messages that were posted before our regular cutoff time of 6pm last night.

Thanks for your patience,
Barry

There was a post last night that killed the digest. So tonight's digest will cover 2 day (from 6pm Thursday to 6pm Saturday). Is Mercury retrograde again?

Hi Everybody,

Lot's of stuff today:

2-Day Digest Again

Once again there was a post in last night's digest that prevented it from going out. Tonight's digest will cover 2 days again. I'm haven't been able to figure out what's wrong just yet, so please have patience if this should happen again.

New Categories

I have reorganized the categories on the main page along with adding two new categories: Censored & Un-Censored (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=104) and WaccoBB.net FAQ. (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=105)

There as been some discussion (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=21379) about some posts I "censored". One of my concerns with posts of dubious taste is that it can offend some of our more sensitive members. So in order to balance that concern with freedom of speech I have created a new Censored & Un-Censored (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=104) category (suggestions for an alternate name are welcome). This is an opt-in category (you'll need to select it to receive it in your digest, see this thread (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=394) for instructions). Posts that may be offensive or in otherwise poor taste will be moved there. If they are part of an ongoing thread, I'll note that a post has been moved to the censored category and provide a link. You are also welcome to post directly to that category should you want to be particularly outrageous.

There are still some things that will be unacceptable there, such as posting private email, character assassination and anything overtly illegal. Also keep in mind that kids may be in the audience.

I separated out our accumulated FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) from the Help Desk (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=14) category into a new WaccoBB.net FAQ (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=105). Please check this category if you have a question about how to use WaccoBB.net. If you can't find your answer there, please post your question to the Help Desk (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=14) category. If you are having trouble posting, see the How to Post link on the left menu or Contact Us ([email protected]).

Guideline update

There is a new guideline:

12) USERNAMES: Use only one username for your postings. The only exception to this is if you have business or other organization you may have a second username in the name of the organization for posting about the organization.
Also, if you forget your password please use the password recovery form provided on the website.

Supporting Membership Update

There has also been some discussion (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=21063) about the use of the member title "Free Member" for users who have not pitched in, either financially or by volunteering, to help support this service. I have removed this title for the time being. The discussion also included a proposal (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?p=29460#post29460) by a member to form a finance committee to support this service.

Supporting members may change their user title to most anything on your User Control Panel here (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/profile.php?do=editprofile).

I'd like to acknowledge one member who truly was a Founding Member: my friend, Don Jackson (don (https://www.waccobb.com/forums/member.php?u=14)). Don was a steady source of support and guidance during the early (and rather trying) days of WaccoBB.net. Thanks Don!

Again, if you use this service (and if you are reading this you do!) I want to encourage you to be a supporting member by contributing just $2/month for non-commercial usage (that's just one organic avocado a month). Click here for the membership options (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/membership.php). Volunteer options include distributing flyers, helping to review posts and helping answer the Help Desk posts. Please contact me ([email protected]) about joining our Waccoteer crew.

I am happy to say that there a bunch of new Supporting Members so far this month! Please accept my sincere gratitude for your generosity!

Hi Everybody,

I'm looking forward to our annual local jubilee (https://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=jubilee) known as the Harmony Festival (https://www.harmonyfestival.com/) and I imagine many of you are too. It should be fun and informative along with lots of great networking! I look forward to seeing/meeting many of you there!

Mrs. Wacco is standing by waiting for the next juicy conscious relationship question for her Ask Linda column (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=13737). She really is very good! You can email your question to her privately at [email protected] and she'll give you her answer back privately. You can decide if it's OK for her to post it publicly (withholding your name) where you may receive additional feedback from the community.

I'd like to give my warm gratitude to our new supporting members:

:fireworks:Hi Everybody,

I hope you are having/had a good Inter-Dependence day! And how about Sebastopol Fireworks yesterday?! I thought they were the best yet, by a long shot! ooooo-aaaahh!

I'm going to be on retreat through the 16th. :meditate: Waccoteer Bill Hannant has kindly consented to mind the store in my absence. Thanks Bill! :angelsmilie: You can reach him through the standard Contact Us link. And if you are ever in the market for Health Insurance, either individual or business, be sure to give Bill a call! He's one nice and helpful guy! See his post here (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=20694).

I also want to thank all the folks who participated in the Wacco Finance Committee. A lot of good ideas where generated and I plan to explore them when I return.

Thanks also to the following new supporting members for their generous support.

Hi Everybody,

The the Cajun-Zydeco festival (https://www.winecountrycajun.com/) tickets went fast, but the Country Music tickets didn't (why am I not surprised with this crowd?) So I swapped the the Country Music tickets for more Cajun-Zydeco tickets. So I still have 9 Cajun-Zydeco tickets available.

I'm going to open it up to Free Members at this point as well. The standard ticket price is $20. The WaccoBB.net discount prices are:

Supporting Members: $10/ticket
Free Members: $15/ticket

If you are currently a Free Member now's a great time to sign up to be a Supporting Member of WaccoBB.net! Non-commercial supporting membership starts at just $24/year and it will save you $10 on a pair of tickets. You can see the options and more info on the Membership Page (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/membership.php) of your User Control Panel.

If you'd like some tickets please Paypal $10 or $15 per ticket to [email protected] ([email protected])(please include your username and address) or send a check and a self addressed stamped envelope to:

WaccoBB.net
P.O. 1112
Sebastopol, CA 95472

I'll post to this thread when the tickets are gone. If you are mailing a check, email me ([email protected]) to let me know and I'll hold the tickets for you for 3 days. New members will need to join at the annual rate to qualify for this promotion.

Hi Everybody,

I hope you are all getting ready for the long holiday weekend (those of you not on the Playa, of course).

I upgraded the system today. It was a minor update that mostly changed some of the technology behind the system, rather than changing the interface. This will lay the ground work for some more upgrades coming soon! If you notice any problems please let me know ([email protected]) ASAP!

User Tip
When looking at the list of threads in a category listing or the New Posts listing, the threads that have posts that you have not seen yet are listed in Bold. They are also preceding by a little https://www.waccobb.com/368/waccobb/orangebuttons/firstnew.gif button which will take you to the first new (to you) post in that thread!

Have a great long weekend! :sunshine:

Hi Everybody,

As you may have noticed, I added a new Post button on the home page that prompts you for the category. I hope this makes posting easier for some of you. I have now also added a Post link on the left menu that works the same way, but is always available! So you can post to any category from where you are! Just remember to save/submit whatever you were working on before clicking it.

Happy Posting!

Thanks to our latest batch of Supporting Members. If you are not a supporting member yet you can sign up now here (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/membership.php).

I was going through your list of supporting members and you forgot about me :(: How sad, I didn't make the list.I'm Sorry, Becky! I suppose that was because your support is in the form of your wonderful graphics that you do for me from time to time, including the recent Picnic and Social banners, which are deeply appreciated! It just didn't make it into my standard system. Please accept my apologies and gratitude!

And while I'm at it, here's a list of our recent Supporting Members. Thanks to all of you for helping make this service possible!

Hi Folks,

I hope you all had a warm and joyous Christmas! Being Jewish, I observed the holiday in the traditional fashion: Chinese Food and a Movie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1uZ_W7atDE)! Mrs. W. and I saw Charlie Wilson's War (https://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809774261/info;_ylt=AioxjZi_RGEMyQJvBGAeZMRfVXcA) and loved it! I don't get to see many movies, so I may not be as jaded as some. It's got it all: a good plot based on a true story, great acting and directing (Directed by Mike Nichols (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Nichols) {Mrs. W. tells me he's among the best} with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts), laughs, drama, inside politics, eye candy of all kinds and a good lesson. I'll leave a more formal review to Mad Miles, our resident movie critic (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=17471), but it gets   from us!

The holiday season has also inspired me to create a new category: Inspiration & Gratitude (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=109). You can see my introduction here (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=29956). Please help us get this category off to a good start by posting a short piece that has really touched and inspired you!

I'm going to do my best to retreat from general maintenance and support for the next couple of weeks to get some new features implemented and some :video: video tutorials made! So I'm not going to be monitoring the board that closely during that time. If you see anything that really needs my attention please alert me via email. I'll be sure to read it.

If anybody out there would like to step up and help monitor & edit posts (broken & excessive quotes, dupes, reposts, etc.) and/or answer questions (forgot password, etc.) during this time I sure would love it! I'll get you started on the simple stuff. You need to be relatively handy with this website and with computers in general (you know what a URL is, etc.), be online frequently and can devote an hour a day to this task. This would be a great way to become a Supporting Member! Please contact me ([email protected]) if you are interested.

I hope you all enjoy this special time between Christmas and New Years!

Barry

Hi Everybody,

I'm going on an offline work retreat at Harbin next week to develop a proper business plan for WaccoBB.net. I hope to prove to myself that it makes sense to hire a programmer and develop a bunch of new features while increasing the ease of use of the site. I think you'll like what I have in mind!

Shelley (Shellebelle) will be generally keeping an eye on the site, along with Royce (Juggledude) and Bill Hannant. I'll be in very limited email contact so please wait on anything that needs my attention if at all possible. And thanks to Shelley, Royce and Bill for their help!

I'll be installing an upgrade when I return to take more advantage of our new https://www.waccobb.net/forums/waccobb/orangebuttons/post_thanks.gif feature.

I want to warmly welcome and express my https://www.waccobb.net/forums/waccobb/orangebuttons/post_thanks.gif to our new supporting members! You can join them here (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/membership.php)!

Hi Everybody,

I'm back from Harbin and caught up with my email. Whew! Harbin was great and I got a lot of good work done, along with a bit of soaking. Thanks again to Bill, Shelley and Royce for keeping an eye on the joint...

Harbin & Cruise community getaways?

It struck me that it might be fun if a bunch of us headed up to Harbin at the same time. Please reply privately if you might be interested in joining us and let me know if mid-week or weekends would be best. I'll set something up in the spring if there is interest.

And while I'm on the subject of future getaways, I'm starting to look into the possibility of a Wacco Cruise this fall! https://www.pbreview.com/forums/images/smilies/boat.gif Talk about fun...!

New Banner Opportunities

I've restructured our sponsorship banner offerings. You can now get a once a week banner or any other creative scheduling you'd like with attractive pricing. For instance you can get a once a week banner for a year for less than $10/week! You can see the new pricing schedule here (https://www.waccobb.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10521) and from the Advertise link on the left menu. As our membership (now over 6,000!) and pageviews (now over 200,000/month) continues to grow, WaccoBB.net is an increasingly effective way to get your message out to the local progressive community.

One of the many ways you can help out with making WaccoBB.net possible and thus become a Supporting Member, is to refer somebody for WaccoBB.net banner. Just ask the person who is interested to mention your name and I'll grant you Supporting Member status when they purchase it. If you are already a Supporting Member, I'll give you a cash bonus of 20% of their first banner package!

Gratitude

I want to give our new Supporting Members a warm welcome!

Hi Everybody!

I've created a new category for our senior (in years) members. I've called it WaccoElders for the moment and I have opened it to members from outside of the Northbay in the hopes of forming a wider community for conscious/progressive Elders. So please invite your like-minded friends and relatives from other areas.

I've left it open for commercial posts (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=19899) from Commercial Supporting Members (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=19843) for products and services that are targeted to the senior community. I think these posts can be helpful and I'll watch to see that they don't overwhelm the category.

I'm open to other names, descriptions and guidelines should a consensus form around another setup and that it is embraced and used by community.

Anything to do with later stages of life are welcome. I could imagine threads around senior co-housing, senior discounts, AARP and other senior organizations, assisted living, (alternative) medical care, staying active, travel, service referrals, parent care, insurance, social security, exercise partners, support groups, etc.

So please post something and join us!

Thanks Barry for the new WaccoElders space. It feels really good to be
recognized, especially in these times when health cutbacks, short term
American memory/sound bite culture seems to be taking over !

Question: Do you let people know when to renew their support? I'm not sure when I paid the $24.

Mucho gratitude for your thoughtfulness !

Hi Everybody,

Some of you may not have received your Daily Digest on occasion during the last few weeks. The program that generates the digest runs for almost 10 hours now and sends out almost 5,000 digests nightly. Every so often the programs stops after sending out a few thousand digests. Since the digest goes out in username order, this affects people with usernames lower in the alphabet.

I'm not sure what is going wrong and its hard to diagnose since its not repeatable (it stops at a different place each time). However I do know that I am pushing the limit on the server in terms of both processing time and number of emails sent.

My plan is to move the digest to the website during the next month or two and just send out the Table of Contents with links to the threads on the website and a link to the whole digest on the website. Featured posts (paid) will still be included in the digest, along with the banners from our sponsors. Supporting Members will be able to opt to continue to get digest complete with all the posts.

Hopefully this will make the Digest more stable. It will also help with preventing your digest from being trapped by your spam filter, as well as making all of the features of the website available.

So please bear with us for a while. If it gets to be more of a regular problem, I'll start putting a link on the website for the latest digest with all the categories and posts. In time you will be able access your customized digest (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=394) with just your selected categories.

In the meantime, in response to a request (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=33038), I have added a new Date and Time field in the Events and Classes category!

Sometimes when I've missed the digest for a few days (for whatever reason) or just want to see what's coming up on the next digest, I simply click the "new posts" option on the menu from the main page. This seems to work out fine for me and I can get "caught up" on anything I may have missed. People who find that their digest hasn't arrived as expected could try do this during their usual email checking time. (You do need to be signed in for this to work.)

Hi Everybody,

I'm heading back up to Harbin this weekend with Mrs. Wacco for some R&R. I'm going to stay up through Tuesday afternoon to prepare a bunch of video demos for you all! So stock up on some popcorn!

Shelley (Shellebelle) will be generally keeping an eye on the site, along with Royce (Juggledude) and Bill Hannant. I'll be offline until Sunday afternoon and then in very limited email contact so please wait on anything that needs my attention if at all possible. And thanks again to Shelley, Royce and Bill for their help!

I'll be announcing plans for our next WaccoBB.net Social on Saturday, April 5th when I return. This time it will be combined with a modern dance performance (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=32332) at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts. Save the date! Details to follow! It will be a fun night out!

Hi Everybody,

After rather rough 6 weeks since Harmony when my computer (not the WaccoBB.net server) crashed for the second time this year which prompted me to switch to a Mac from MSf$(#@) Vista, I am more or less back online. We're still experiencing deliverabilty problems with the digest for some users, however.

Big things are starting to happen here at World HQ, including a some sort of cooperative arrangement discussion with https://webspiritcommunity.com/, reworking the digest to make it more deliverable and available online, and a significant upgrade to the underlying software is scheduled for sometime in the fall or winter which will include much more developed personal profiles (ala MySpace) and the option to create user created categories. I'll also be posting an email subscription video demo that was just about ready before my computer went down.

Some key players of the team are starting to fall into place as well. Along with our much appreciated community volunteers (Shellebelle, Royce (Juggledude), Bill Hannant) and various generally helpful community members (ie Braggi) I have a new assistant I'll be introducing to you shortly, and very promising candidates for a programmer and sponsorship development (ok, sales!). We 've also had a steady stream of new supporting members which I very much appreciate!

In the meantime, it's summer in this most blessed part of the world, and I'm heading up for some dancing by a river (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=36114) this weekend! I'll be totally offline. Shellebelle is kind enough to keep an eye on the joint while I'm gone. I hope you too will have an opportunity to take some time off and celebrate and reconnect with source this summer.

Blessings,
Barry

Hi Everybody,

We'll be installing a new system upgrade soon, tentatively scheduled for this Friday afternoon, Sept 19th, pending our testing. The system will be unavailable for a couple of hours while we wire it up just right.

The upgrade includes several enhancement to our gratitude feature, a better search feature including "my posts", the ability to email the full contents of a post to yourself or someone else, and a few other things. I hope you will like it!

Thanks for this. I have been cogitating on the Gratitude issue and have found myself checking to see how many gratitudes people have given, especially if they are particularly verbose. It amazes me that some have much to say, and little gratitude. Some do not write a lot, and give many gratitude messages. It takes some time to develop the habit of observing enough to realize..'I liked that', and then push that button. And it is quite affirming to recieve gratitude from someone. Every community is build on the give and take flow, and Gratitude expressed is very important to keep the flow flowing. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Laura

Well, shoot! I didn't even know that one could reply with a comment when expressing "gratitude". I thought that was it, just thanking the person for posting whatever they had posted, period. I'm not sure it's clear how to add your gratitude remarks, unless I've simply not noticed a big explanation about it....?

"Expressing Gratitude" here on WaccoBB.net is really simple! Just a click! No comment, no muss no fuss! And once we get the update installed, now scheduled for this Wednesday, the person receiving the gratitude will be notified by email. So brighten somebody's day and say "Thank You" if you appreciated something that they posted!

41% are in their 50s, 22% in their 60s, and 19% in their 40s

49% own their home

49% earn $40,000 or more

54% are either married or in a LTR, 39% are single and/or dating

60% have complete their Bachelor's Degree or better, including 36 PhD's!

56% are Self-employed

Events, Classes, workshops and local restaurants are the most popular things people look for

50% look at WaccoBB.net daily

41% "love" the overall community, and another 39% think its "Okay"

A Business Directory with community testimonials was the most requested new feature (49% - coming soonish!) followed by performance previews and reviews (39% - any writers out there?) and a photo gallery (36%). 16% said it was perfect just the way it is.

49% said that banner ads get their attention more that regular posts, and the same amount said they have clicked on them for more info

39% said that featured posts get their attention more than regular posts.

And 88% said the moderation was just right, with 8% saying it needs closer moderation and 4% said it was too moderated. I'll take that as a vote of confidence!

A special thanks to everybody who shared your comments. I haven't read them all yet but here's a few I noticed:

I asked for housecleaning help references and found someone who not only was a great help to get rid of the mold in the apartment, but became a great friend!
Responded to an ad that was listed on WaccoBB. Got the job. Am now sweethearts with my boss. Thank you Wacco
i just moved in california last year and it was not easy to find contact and to know how to move in my new country. i'm a seamstress and some friends suggested me to put an ad on waccobb.thanks to the answer of my ad now i have a small but nice group of people that periodically ask about my service and that appreciate my work!! thanks waccobb!!!

One of the thing I like about Wacco is when members reach out to help one another, I have gotten a lot of good ideas and given a ton of help to members and that makes me very happy. When I find answers to something I've searched for everywhere it is satisfying.
WaccoBB has helped me find resources, people to buy things I want to sell, brought me clients for my workshops, and helped my name become known in the community. Sometimes I'll post a request that seems unlikely to get answered and quickly have the information I need. It has steered me toward professionals whom I've loved and away from some worth avoiding. It has been a great and valuable service for me all around. I'm grateful you exist.

WACCO is like a localized Craigslist on steroids. It's got heart and practicality blended perfectly.
My husband and I had a dishwasher for sale listed on Wacco. Not even an hour after I posted it I received an email with a phone # attached so that I could contact the potential buyer. I called her right away and we were discussing the possible sale. I knew I had heard that voice before. It ended up being one of my friends whom I hadn't spoken with for quite some time. We had a great laugh and she she wanted to purchase the dishwasher. My husband and I delivered it to her and ended up having a great evening catching up with her and her boyfriend. Wacco helped us reconnect with a friend!!

I donated old calendars to a woman who requested collage material. She was so happy with the donation that she invited me to a collage class at her house, which was fantastic! I'm now sleeping on a wonderful cotton/wool mattress and my living room is graced with a beautiful natural-fiber rug, both bought from WaccoBB ads. My garden has thrived with free horse manure, and I was gifted with free organic fruit and vegetables this summer. I also sold a great bed and almost-new massage table, and gave an elegant evening dress to a teenager going to her first formal dance. Every connection was full of trust, openness and warmth, because we feel like community when the contact is made through WaccoBB. I think WaccoBB is amazing, and I'm deeply appreciative of Barry and all his hard work to make it happen.

Thanks again and I hope to see you Saturday!
