Don't know if this topic matters to anyone else here. But I'm very concerned because Sutter Hospital is closing down. I've had experience with all three main hospitals - Kaiser, Sutter, & Memorial. Here's my 1/50th of a buck; take it for what you will.

Kaiser - I was a member for about 8 years. They provided excellent services. But every year there were more and more patients. Finally, the lines at the pharmacy became so long it just wasn't worth it to me. I also became a self-pay patient eventually, and Kaiser was instantly way out of my price range.

I was kicked by a horse a few years ago. I went to Palm Drive (I'll save that place for a different rant), but they sent me by ambulance to Memorial. I stayed there 3 days. It was one of the worst 3 days of my life. They performed unnecessarily redundant services, and services I plain didn't need. I was "seen" by several different doctors for the same malady, and charged by all of them.

Memorial, charged me way WAY too much for what they did. Every time a nurse walked into my room it was $80 - some of my meds were over $80 per pill! Of course they refused to let me use my own medication. 2+ years later I am still contesting their charges. They apparently won't budge an inch, and are now getting into the threatening phase of things. I'll be looking for a lawyer...

Because Memorial was such a horrendous experience for me, a subsequent time when I needed to go into the hospital I went to Sutter. I was hugely impressed by the quality of services there. They were very willing to negotiate charges for medications, which Memorial is not at all willing to do.

My insurance coverage will only cover various services to a very specific amount. I found that Sutter charged almost exactly what my insurance would cover - Memorial is trying to charge me over two times that amount.

I'm afraid now, that if Kaiser and Memorial are the only options available to me in the future, I may not be able to afford to get services which will keep me alive.

Thank you for your stories. I am very concerned for our county if we lose Sutter Medical Center. Unless the entire community stands up to this closure I'm afraid it may just slip through. I have worked there a little over a year and also could lose my job. All ready, key people there are moving on to other jobs. I do consider this a major health care crisis for our entire community. There will be a board of supervisor's meeting where the public can speak and I'll keep you posted for dates when these events take place. In the meantime, everyone can contact our board of supervisors to protest this closure. I hope people wake up to this soon - it is a major issue for us all.

Well I have some comments about your important subject-and important it is!

I have been going to Kaiser for 42 years now-first in SSF and then here in Santa Rosa. Over all, the quality of care my family has recieved has been good. My extended family has had some problems with their surgical department though.

I completely agree with you that the volume of patients has gotten way out of control over the last few years. I don't mean to sound prejudiced but most of the new patients I encounter don't speak English. This bugs the crap out of me. One of the reasons why is because a few years ago during a lapse of coverage I had to go to Alliance Medical Clinic in Healdsburg and I was treated like lower than dirt becauase I didn't speak "spanish" and I therefore should not be poor and needing medical assistance. I was treated so badly that I've never been back. I however, see Kaiser bending over backwards to accomodate non english speakers in every possible way. It would be nice to see new members of ALL ethnic groups, not just one.

That was just a side comment and not my real point here...

Anyway, I've also gone to Community Hospital, the County run health clinic, Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, and a private practice in Healdsburg, private practice cardiologist, etc. when I've needed to and I can say with the complete confidence that the worst care was from the private practice physician in Healdsburg (as my youngest daughter almost died from a condition I kept bringing to his attention which he kept ignoring), and then Barton who gave me an IV with a dirty line (I was vomiting so profusely I couldn't make them stop!)

So the quality of care the hospitals and doctors apparently vary by each case and encounter. I think it would be really hard to make a generalization about the quality of care a particular place has to offer. I think most of it depends upon the quality of the care giver, not the center.

Back again to Kaiser...I've had straight Kaiser coverage (which I paid a whopping $400 a month for for just me and my daughter in 2000) which was MOST of my income at the time, medi-cal, medi-cal/Kaiser, and just paid cash: all of these options being acceptable to Kaiser. It has been a big hassle to have to deal with their Billing and Member services departments to switch the coverages and I have been treated differently when only a medi-cal covered person (I was not able to get tests or medicines I needed) but all in all, it is nice that I've been able to stay with one place which has all my medical records in one place, where I can see a specialist if I need to, is conveniently located, and they speak english all in one facility.

I'm not too stoked on Kaiser taking on all the folks who can't afford medical care, but as someone who has gone without medical coverage I am thankful that SOMEONE is stepping up and is willing to see those folks that need care.
Boo to Memorial and the County/State for not doing more for those that need medical care!

Most of my relatives live in Canada and they don't have anything good to say about their health care system either. Profit always seems to dictate quality and availablity of care no matter what!

I feel for your situation and hope you will have some success at perhaps the Occidental Health clinic.

I thought this was all a done deal...that Sutter, Warrick, Norton (formerly Oakcrest) were all closing. In fact I heard that St. Joseph (Memorial) already bought the Warrick hospital building.
So, are you saying that this might not be definite and we have a chance to oppose it?...I don't think many people are aware about that. Thanks for the info.
Blessings,
Marcia

I've been doing some research on this topic. Here are my findings:

Re: Sutter/Memorial Public Hearing on 2/27/07

Called 565-2241 and was transferred to the office of Chair of the Board Valerie Brown.
Spoke with Ms. Brown’s Admin. Assistant Lynn.
Lynn told me that the discussion on the Sutter/Memorial transaction will start at 2:30PM in council chambers at 575 Administration Drive Rm. 102A. However, she said that other items may be discussed before hand so I would suggest being there earlier to get in and to not miss any of the meeting. The room holds 100 people. There is a podium in the middle of the room. All speaking parties, presenters and those addressing the board will be amplified/microphoned. You do not need to sign up to speak before hand, but I would check on this point again. Each individual addressing the board will have 3 minutes to speak. They know that SCIU and Nurses Union will be present. They are anticipating that the room will be packed. There are public meetings held every Tuesday in chambers. Complete agendas for all meetings are posted the previous Thursday online at www.sonoma-county.org. Click on Board of Supervisors and then click on Agenda.
Lynn also mentioned that the Board will be having a workshop on this matter on April 17th in chambers at 5:30 PM. The title of this meeting will be Board of Supervisors Workshop on Proposed Sutter/Memorial Hospital Transaction. It is unclear if this will be open to the public.
Lynn was not sure what the format of the meeting would be and told me to call the Health Services Office at 565-4700.
I called HS and spoke to Jessica Holt. She did not have the answer for me right away, but looked into it and called me back within an hour. She told me to call and speak with Rod Stroud at 565-4918.
I called and spoke with Rod Stroud. He said that the format of the meeting will be as follows: 1) Presentation to the board by the Department of Health Services. 2) Presentation to the board by the CEO of each hospital, Sutter & Memorial. 3) Public comment. 3 minutes per individual. They will listen to multiple representatives from each group present as well as individuals. The board may use its discretion in limiting the number of representatives from each specific group to speak if they see fit.
Rod also told me that there will be a number of round table discussions on specific issues within this discussion next week including: one on Government Programs and Indigent Care, Emergency Services, Women's Health and Reproductive Services, Family Practice/Resident Program, and two on General Health Care. The first 4 discussions are open to public viewing but not public participation. The individuals that will be discussing matters at these meetings have been chosen per their expertise by the DHS. The final two discussions are open to public participation and will be held on Feb. 22 from 3PM to 5PM and from 6:30PM to 8:30 PM at 475 Aviation BLVD. The dates and times for the other meetings will be posted online at www.sonoma-county.org, go to Department of Health Services and click the Sutter link.
All information from these round table discussions will be used to make decisions at the April 17th workshop.
He told me that I could get a copy of the Sutter contract from Joann Borri of DHS. Her number is 565-4936. I called and and spoke with her and she emailed me a copy of Sutters contract. If you would like to have a copy of it email me at [email protected] and I will forward it on to you. It is a large file so I am not posting it here right now.
I hope this is helpful to the community. We all need to stick together and join voices to tell these big companies that they can't push us around.
It is in our action that we lead and by our complaicancy that we are oppressed.
Peace to all and enjoy the sunshine!!!!

Yeah - and if you put the whole Oakcrest / Norton Center into the mix - not the same company - I think Oakcrest / Norton Center is being run by the county still and is closing soon. I don't know if we have any say on this issue. I talked to a friend of mine there and he said the people would end up in jail. Then we'd ship them off somewhere - SF, Napa or whereever. These are people who need meds and getting on track and all kinds of services and real support systems that are not available to them in this country or county. Right now, they get referred to the in-patient psychiatric unit until they're stabalized, many homeless, some streetwise, some with local family and support systems - but the main point is: do we want to ship them somewhere else or do we want to help. This is a major problem.

By the way, thank you for doing all your research - it's a great effort - takes alot of time and I really appreciate it.

I will give more dates as I hear them.

Update on Board of Supervisors next public hearing on the possible closing of Sutter Medical Center in Santa Rosa: Feb. 27. The supervisors will hold an initial public hearing on Sutter's transfer of publicly guaranteed programs to Memorial at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, but full details of that transaction are not likely before early April.

There will be a meeting of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday the 27th at 2:30 - and it is important that there is a HUGE showing at this meeting. The County was only too glad to pass the buck to Sutter in leasing them Community Hospital a few years ago, and they are not interested in taking back the responsibility of making sure everyone has access to care here in Sonoma County. But it IS their responsibility!
I am a family physician, have practiced in Sonoma County for over 15 years, and I know enough about the economics of health care today to know that Sutter should not be expected to carry the ever increasing load of underinsured, uninsured, MediCal and MediCare patients.
Our health care system is broken and this crisis can be an opportunity to do something locally about the problem. If the plan goes through as currently expected, we stand to lose access to basic services we now take for granted - a private system (Kaiser) and a Catholic hospital limited by the Catholic Ethical and Religious Directives can not meet the needs of this county. Please consider attending the meeting on Tuesday!
