Hello All animal loving Wacco friends,

This is something I just won't let go of. I urgently need to rescue a sweet, male, neutered, disabled rottweiler. His current "living" situation is in a trash-saturated yard where his owner has decided he doesn't want him anymore. Meaning he no longer takes care of him; no feeding, interaction- nothing.
I found out about this through a friend of the owner. I went out and spent time with the dog, fed, brushed, talked to him. He is a sweetheart, sad eyes, begging for attention.
Another tenant on the property has been feeding him, but this morning called my friend saying the dog food ran out, he can't afford to get more and Please come get him! My friend left a bit ago to buy some food and go out to the dog. He may or may not bring him back to my house.
I was told that this dog was 6-8 years old or 14 yrs. He is a purebred rottie so I doubt he's 14. I have a 10 yr, old Rottie girl and the other dog seems younger.
I was also told that when this dog was younger he was hit by a car and his back leg was broken. He was not taken to a vet, no cast, no x-ray, nothing. He crawled under the house and basically lived under there for 18 months. Another tenant at the time crawled under and fed him.
When I saw this beautiful soul, he was so starved for attention, I went about 8 feet away from him and called him to me. He struggled to stand up and had real trouble walking to me, his hind legs didn't work right. But he DID come to me!
This dog is in serious urgent need of human intervention. He cannot get help for himself. I don't think he has ever been seen by a vet. I think that should be the first step. I have no extra $$$ for that.
My house has three steps at both doors. I can probably build a ramp. The cost of food I will gladly pay.
I think this dog could really benefit from a wheelchair. I've seen them out there, but I could never afford to buy one. He might need some physical therapy, too. I am guessing he weighs between 110-130 lbs.
Maybe some of you dog-loving people can help him with a medical evaluation, dog wheelchair or donations toward these. Maybe you know someone that can foster or adopt him with more knowledge than me.
I met this dog last week and ever since my daily thoughts are haunted by those soulful, sad eyes. I have to do something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Bottom Line: I will take this dog in a heartbeat and could really use some help.

You can answer privately or publicly.
Thank you for any help at all!
Laure

I would take the dog, as my heart is touched by his story. Unfortunately I can't risk that as I have many children who come on the property & I have no idea how socialized is the Rottweiler you describe.

However, I will donate 40-50lbs dogfood to help you out. Email me your street address and it will appear.

I have a 35 pound bad of nutro..

AllAboard Animal Search and Rescue
Also gave you some ideas maybe for help for his injurys in private email... you might hit a soft spot with one of the vets.. just make sure they are good vets.. if you like you can email me ,, and we could talk more..
Is he able to walk.?? A baby stroller would help you to get him around I am sure you could find one.. email some of the rescues and maybe they could pitch in with his bills.. Post on Craigs list also.

And Good Luck.. and thanks for helping him, you are his angel now..and his personal escort to something better.

Good lord, it makes me shudder to think that someone would treat an animal in such a heartless way. If you cannot care for a creature or don't want it anymore, give it away or have it put down.

Would Paula the Vet to Pet be willing to examine and treat the dog if you take custody? If so, maybe we can contribute $5-10 directly to Paula to help cover her time and supplies.

I'll chip in $20 toward Vet to Pet's bill if Laure adopts the dog and Paula treats him.

Good suggestion! Paula's just starting her practice and is already doing pro bono work, I know. I'll come in with $10-$15. Anyone else?

Thank you both Dian and Tars for getting the karma flowing. It's great to hear that Paula is doing pro-bono work, but it is difficult to make a living on a pro-bono basis! And vet school is not exactly free...

Would it be possible to set up a PayPal "tip jar" or donation link so that a large group of people can safely contribute and help defray the costs of a vet and treatment, equipment, etc. There's got to be at least one person on WaccoBB who can set up a PayPal donation link on a simple Web page for Laure so she can focus on caring for these animals.

For someone doing web site design services, this would be good publicity for you. Let us know who you are, what you provided, and how we can do business with you! I prefer to spend my money with someone who has demonstrated caring and trustworthiness; probably a lot of Waccobbians feel the same way.

On a related note, my s.o. is a machinist and welder who is willing to make a wheeled cart or some sort of device for the dog IF a vet says that it would help and provides specifications. The difficult part will be finding appropriate wheels. I'm thinking a pair of them new-fangled "all terrain" skateboard wheels might be the hot ticket. Any other ideas?

Best,
Kirsten

Thank you for rescuing the animal. You have a good heart as well as those helping. The owner should be turned in to the police. Animal cruelty is a severe crime.

Ditto.

Several people responded to your request for help and are concerned about this animal. You need to let us know what has happened and how the dog is doing -- including whether or not it is still alive.

Incidentally, I unsubscribed from this forum because all these "help!!! abused/hurt/lost animal in trouble" posts got too overwhelming. We wish we could help them all, but that is unfortunately not possible.

Laure, please follow up and let us know what the situation is. Also, did Paula (Vet-to-Pet) respond or treat the dog?

Thanks,
Kirsten

Dear Laure,

So many people are willling to help you and the dog. Please tell us what's happening with him. It's been so long that we've heard from you that I'm worrying.

...It is overwhelming, the number of calls for help. I had thought about getting off the list also but mostly because there was so little response to these dilemmas... Dynamique wrote: Ditto

As Buddha, Jesus, Mother Teresa, Francis of Assisi and some Candide-like Wacco-ites understand, the world is full of suffering. It takes an unusually stalwart soul to see the world around us as it is, and an even more glorious one to act on it, consistantly. I know I'm not up to the task, other than intermittently.

Hi.
This situation is soo touching. I cannot help much financially but would like to see this guy get to a vet.
Also, sometimes rott rescues will help and you can find them on the web. I will check it out myself if you want. There is a great general rescue place called Petslifeline in Sonoma where I got my rotty mix 7 mos. ago. A great organization. Their number is:966 4577 12pm to 4:30.
There is another place that takes in older dogs that have disabilities but I can't think of the name...darn.
Where is this dog?
I'd like to meet him if I could.

Dear Laure,
Bless you for taking this on.
It may not be necessary to accomodate an improperly-healed broken leg long term.
A veterinarian may be able to give him anesthesia, re-break the leg and set it correctly.
As far as funding this is concerned, i think you can contact PayPal directly and have them set up
an account through which people can donate. The last i heard, their minimum donation to process was $10,
and i think enough people would each give that much to cover it.
I also agree we need to be doing some preventive work on behalf
of non-human animals at the same time. One thing i'd like to do is get the law changed
such that the kidnapping of a non-human is treated as a kidnapping and not as petty theft.

Actually, PayPal will take less . . . I've often paid $5.00 thru PayPal.

But do we know where and how the poor dog is? That is the real question?
