Since so many of you were kind enough to pass on many different ways of getting rid of ants I wonder if you can do the same to rid area of RATS and/or mice without the heavy duty toxics which most people probably use. There are other animals, such as birds to consider when trying to rid area of rats and mice.

There are sonic devices....electronic devices that emit sounds repellant to rodents. Also again...keep areas you want free of rodents clean and free of food , food scraps and debris.
Rodents are a part of the web of life and perform their function in it. It is probably impossible to be entirely free of them. They have to live somewhere!

My cat and 2 chihuahuas do a great job around my compost area...but it saddens me to see the dead and injured ones. Some of the wood rats are quite beautiful....

as far as them carrying disease...humans are much much much worse!

From the Marin Sonoma Mosquito abatement website,
RAT CONTROL BY ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

https://www.msmosquito.com/woodpile.gif Rat survival and prosperity requires three basic environmental conditions:

Abundant food
Available source of water
Access to suitable harborage

Good environmental management practices, are the most effective approaches to rat control.

Harvest fruits as soon as they ripen. Pick up all fallen fruit.

Never leave uneaten pet food outside overnight.

Algerian ivy, oleander, bougainvillea, and other thickly matted plants should be thinned and trimmed well away from roofs, walls, fences, utility poles, and trees.

Store wood and lumber piles on racks at least 18 inches above the ground and 12 inches away from the walls; clean up debris piles.

Repair leaky faucets and eliminate any other unnecessary standing water.
