I was in San Francisco on weds.. I donated my services to help a rescue group find a lost dog in golden gate park that was brought here from Asia.. She went into foster care, and had gotten frightened as shy dogs do. and got out of her back yard,, in going down and trying to help find this dog, A man came up to me and said I looked like a nice rescue lady,, only because I had my 3 dogs, not like he knew I rescued.. he said he wanted me to have his dog. I told him I was full right now.. he said he really hated to go home and tie her to his kitchen table again.. for the day while he was gone,, he said she has to wait for me to come home at lunch for her morning pee pee walk,, I am thinking not even I could hold it for that long,, in the meantime,, the dog is jumping higher and higher in the air trying to get me to notice her.. Again I said I was full and maybe he could find her a home, he said she is free. well after he left and I searched for the dog the rest of the day,, by 9 pm and ready to leave,, I was thinking about this dog.. hm sigh, I called back and went and picked up the dog, he said unless I wanted to buy her collar he wanted it back and so I had not even a collar for her.. I felt although full and not knowing good places for him to take her down there, I went and picked her up.. so I left san francisco with instead of 3 dogs, I added 1 more to the crew..
I am asking the wacco community for sponsorship of this dog.. I was quoted today, by my very good vet.. $247.00 for spaying her ,, her shots, heartworm tested. and heartguard and to be dewormed, I will go get her chipped in couple of days... with some help I am hoping to have her taken care of and up for adoption in 2 weeks,,, I like to make sure my dogs are past any problems after being fixed, although I am big on home visits when I adopt dogs.. any little bit will help..
Anyone interested in adopting this beautiful 5 1/2 month old border collie, she is all cream color,, please contact AllAboard Animal Rescue..

This little girl is not your standard BC color....which can be black & white, red & white, merled or rarely sable & white. I am wondering if she might have trouble in the future with her sight and hearing since, at least in Australian shepherds, an inordinate amount of white can cause blindness or deafness.

Thank You for your input,, I was told by this man she is purebreed border collie,, and was a gift to her sister and worth alot of money.. that doesnt matter to me,, she still is getting fixed.. I want her to just have a good life. with people she loves.. I didnt know this about the whites.. personally looking at her I think she has some lab mixed, and or austr. shepard.. she surely is sweet and very emotionally deprived not now,,she has been playing her little heart out for the day with my other dogs.. My one dog think she is going to hurt the cats which I was told she doesnt like cats.. we can change that at her young age.. so My older aussie female stands guard at the door,, and growls if she comes near.. she is easy going,, whats the big deal behind the door.. very nice dog.. I also have deaf cattledog here.. they still are great dogs.. blind, deaf,, we all get something down the road at the end of our livesl something will happen,, mine will be a heart attack,, but nice to know more information about these dogs..
Thanks Again..

Jamie,
You're a little bit correct. The recessive gene in ACDs and some other breeds that causes deafness is found next to the merle gene in if it's present. It is however a different gene and just because a dog has merle (and merle is NOT the same as a white dog) doesn't mean it has this gene. Also it is not associated with blindness. The only blindness that might come with this pup later in life would that could be foreseen would be the same as any other dog in old age - cataracks. With ACDs there is a genetic predisposition for some called PRA, or progressive retinal atrophy, but this isn't a problem with Border Collies.
The other important fact about this merle association with genetic deafness is that it is CONGENITAL - that means they are BORN with it. If it doesn't show up early (and it's easy to tell) it isn't there. There are many dogs that are out of purebred parents who don't measure up to standards of breed color, coat, size, etc. This is what is known as "pet stock", still expensive but not papered. However if this dog does have some mix somewhere it's a good thing, in my opinion.
By the way, for anyone wondering what 'merle' is, it's a color patterning of skin pigment mixed with white; Dalmatians have it as do ACDs (Australian cattle dogs), heelers, and Australian shepherds only smaller specks of white/pigmented mixed areas (mostly it looks like mottled grey sometimes it looks like a 'blue' color if mixed with small bits of black, or rosey colored for one mixed with red). This pup does not appear to have any merle from what I can see.
