Barry,
I don't understand why my topic asking for advice about the SBC billing issue was moved out of Community and into WaccoTalk.

2 things...
1. When a topic is moved, the site doesn't say where it got moved to... I had to search to find out where it was.

2. In this case I really don't understand why. I would never have put this in Wacco Talk, which I thought was a chat area in msg format for people who want to have long discussions about a topic. I never go to Wacco Talk unless someone suggests we take a topic to that area.

Also, wacco talk does not appear in the email summary... so folks who might have responded to me with additional experience or advice won't ever see the post.

Look forward to your thoughts on this.
And again many thanks for creating a new environment so we can continue to benefit from this sharing as a community.

Hi Suzanne,

I have been slowly getting back online with WaccoBB after my retreat. I don't think I was the person who moved your thread, but I can see why it was moved.

The general idea is that the bulletin board categories (as opposed to the discussion boards: WaccoTalk and WaccoReader) are set up so that there isn't much discussion, so that people can subscribe to them for individual emails or a digest without being subjected to ongoing discussions. If a discussion arises in the bulletin boards, which is always welcome, it will be moved to WaccoTalk with a link left behind so the people who want to follow it can, and it will be subject to peoples subscription to WaccoTalk as to whether or not they continue to receive individual emails or a digest.

In this case, it seems, a link was not left behind. Sorry about that. We (me, Ingo, and Deb) are still finding our way with what are the appropriate policies and procedures to follow. Please bear with us!

Barry.

Sorry to say, but I disagree completely with the rationale for moving lines of discussion to WaccoTalk. The whole point of opening a topic is so that it can be pursued to whatever end it gets to. It made sense when what we had was a "bulletin board" and issues couldn't be threaded, but it doesn't make sense (or at least not GOOD sense) in this new format.....in my humble opinion.

Additionally, I think that if someone/anyone feels a topic should be moved, that it be suggested to the originator rather than just "done". That feels unnecessarily authoritarian. If a thread gets too far off track, someone/anyone can basically start a new thread to give the discussion a more relevant title.

All of which harkens back to one of my earliest comments, which is that I thought that there was no need at all for the Talk category. The response was that issues of a philosophical or artistic or some other nature might be started there without their having to conform to the parameters of one of the designated categories. That made sense to me, and I backed off happily.

End of comment.

Susan

Point taken, Susan. In this case I can see leaving it in general community or wherever it started, but I can also see if a thread really gets going (20+ replies) that I would move it to WaccoTalk with a link left behind. It also depends how many people are involved and what my sense is of how wide the interest level is in the membership.

Hi all,

When I hit "New Posts" at the top of the "home" page the messages moved to WaccoTalk are included in the list of new posts. So, those messages moved to WaccoTalk (which on this forum are my favorite when the discussions get interesting) don't get lost to me. I wonder why this wouldn't be the case for others... Are they only receiving messages that they've subscribed to (and are they not subscribed to WaccoTalk)?

Re Ingo's response, I can't understand for a second how anyone is "forced" to read anything or everything. Everyone gets to chose whether or not they get emails and how many topics they get emails about. Personally I get NO emails and I check the New Posts regularly. Simple.

If people don't want so much input they should unsubscribe from the digest. Very simple.

Susan
My thoughts;

Anything posted in the general community section goes to everyone that subscribes to the digest.

Anything posted in Waccotalk, always shows in the 'New Posts' section.

From experience with the prior wacco-groups, people did not seem to be as interested in receiving ongoing discussion posts, or the original waccotalk would have had 3500 members, rather than 200 or 300 back then.

With that in mind, it is only respectful to all members to hold discussion topics in a designated section where members can choose to go to if interested.

Overall, I personally do not seem to see a problem with someone starting a "closed" thread in the community section to post a discussion topic, and refer to further discussions over that topic in the waccotalk section, which would invite everyone to partake, but not force everyone else to read up on it.

Yours,
Ingo

Thanks Barry, Susan and Indigo for your time on this.

I thought the category of Community was like our old WACCO environment...where we could ask for favors (which is what I thought I was doing with this post = asking for advice), post allerts to the community etc.

What I'm hearing is it is a one way communication category for announcements out and private emails for replies. If that's the case, you might change the category description. If you introduce yourself, wouldn't you expect some of us to reply publically and welcome the person? Would u then move that to WACCO TALK? Or you could disable public reply in the Community section, so that all we can do is email folks?

Is there a reason we can't just have a community free for all category like we used to ? Perhaps let community be whatever it becomes and address problems if they arise as one offs? Like the person asking for help with Firefox was moved from the help section to the community section! LOL
However, that was awesome for me because it spurred me to make the change... so I installed Firefox. That's part of the fun of this ... being exposed to things I wouldn't otherwise see?

Whatever, I remain grateful to Barry et al for creating an environment for us to migrate to. And I am totally grateful for all the excellent advise on the SBC credit issue. As Hans said this happens allot so it's great to see all the options on how to handle this.

Cheers,
Suzanne
