Hi;

I haven't found full-time work yet and I've decided to check out some retail jobs. It's been over 30 years since I've operated a cash register, and I'm sure these newfangled computerized ones are different from the ones back in the 70's! So, if you run a cash register and wouldn't mind taking a few minutes to orient me to the machine when you're not too busy, that would give me a skill needed to get a job before my dwindling savings are kaput. I could pay a few bucks for a few minutes of your time to do this.

Thanks!

Hi Dixon,

I was in exactly the same situation when I applied for work last month. It was not a problem--the place that hired me has to train all new employees on the cash register, because it's not a generic machine like old ones were. It's a computer at least as complex as your cell phone, with umpteen keys for various special functions. Even being familiar with current registers in other stores, you'd need a couple of days to learn how to use it. So, if you are otherwise qualified for the job, your cash register expertise won't make a lot of difference.

However, if you want to work retail, the time to get hired is November, when everyone is gearing up for the Xmas rush. Now, of course, people who have just been hired as seasonal temps, like me, will have precedence for any new openings. So, you might want to reconsider your strategy.
