Can anyone give me information on best voice over internet phone services to use. I am trying to help an animal rescue organization SAVE MONEY. They make LOTS OF CALLS all around the Bay Area even into other States. Many of these calls are on a cell phone.

I understand they are currently spending about $150 monthly on cell phone and phone calling cards per month. Your information and help in this regard is greatly appreciated.

For future reference...Google Voice (https://www.google.com/voice) is open to public now and no invites needed unfortunately only in the US at this time. You need an actual phone (landline or a VoIP phone) to make it work but it's free long distance across US and Canada. Go ahead get your Google Voice account.

Or if you need to call out of the country or Google Voice is a bit too technical for you then you can try Onesuite (https://www.onesuite.com). They got prepaid phone card and VoIP services with competitive rates.

Easiest VOIP is Skype - get a phone number for $3 a month.
Get a Skype phone for $60 total cost.
It works. Not bad. Not awesome. You can use the same Skype account from any computer. Thats good! Small charges on international calls.

If you have a good broadband service (e.g., DSL or cable), I have found onesuite.com's "SuiteAdvantage" to work pretty well - SuiteAdvantage: VoIP broadband phone for cheap long distance calling (https://www.onesuite.com/products_Broadband_Main.asp)

Cost is about $3 a month and less than 3 cents/minute for outgoing calls (incoming are free). Includes voicemail and e-mail delivery/notification of voicemail messages.

https://www.skype.com/i/images/logos/skype_logo.png (https://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/home)I highly recommend Skype (https://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/home), although I have some quibbles with the interface.

Free Skype to Skype video calls!

And as Bryan mentioned, you can get a "phone" number for $3/month and then receive calls to your number and make calls to U.S. phones for free!

If you don't have a webcam (with a mic) on your PC, you'll want one. Get an HD one! The dream of video "phone" calls from the 1964 World's Fair is finally here!

This is also allows you to use your smart phone when you have wi-fi access but not cell access (as I often do).

Line2 (https://www.line2.com/) is new offering in this market, and has some more advanced features, but it's $15/month. At least to the end of 2010, Skype has no additional charges.
