A skatepark has been envisioned for Sebastopol and West County for better than 15 years. On Tuesday, October 3, 2006 the Sebastopol City Council awarded a bid to build the Sebastopol Skatepark and Community Garden to General Engineering contractor A.J. Vasconi. The park will be located on Laguna Park Way in Sebastopol and will include a state of the art skate structure as well as raised garden beds. However, due to significant budget limitations for the project, the City plans to work with the contractor to change the scope of the park to reduce costs. Construction for the bare-bones version of the park will cost over $1,563,000; funds currently available for the project total $1,145,000, and thus we have a gap of $418,000. We will close this gap in one of two ways: either 1) cutting back construction costs by reducing park features, or 2) through additional donations to the project.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

We are looking for more help to create the best possible park for this and future generations. Absent significant donations now, we will need to cut back the scope of the skate structure substantially, resulting in a park that is less than envisioned. Can you contribute to help build this new community park? Please send your tax-deductible check to: City Skate/Garden Fund, <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:address w:st="on"><st1:Street w:st="on">714 Johnson Street</st1:Street>, <st1:City w:st="on">Sebastopol</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">CA</st1:State> <st1:PostalCode w:st="on">95472</st1:PostalCode></st1:address>. <o:p></o:p>

We will also consider ‘naming rights’ for a donation of $500,000 or more (name subject to City Council approval.) Please consider a tax-deductible donation of any amount. Please send your donation to: <o:p></o:p>

Thank you for the information Kenyon.

On the idea of " cutting back construction costs " what about using local volunteers to build it? Personally, I can't really help close a 418k financial gap, but I probably could afford a few hours to help build it.
