Hi Everybody, wishing you and your tribe a kind, memorable, and even tasty Thanksgiving.
I'm making time today to make a pitch for a man --a mensch--that I greatly admire, Jay Levin. He founded the L.A. Weekly (1978? LOL). I loved that newspaper! Way back when, Jay also supported my sales of PLAYHouse kids' primers, most kind.
As you know, I am all about promoting mental health. Jay's latest project serves the monumental task of helping change historic pain-causing mindsets and behaviors for both present and future generations of our youngsters. How? By getting what educators call Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum into every school’s offerings, and its practices into parenting homes.
Jay pointed out to me these 3 primary, non-partison benefits we can all get behind: 1. Reducing the current pandemic-traumatizing of our children, maybe 50% of them; and give them lifelong skills for successful, caring, sane lives. 2. Reduce the damaging collateral effects (huge!) that attend the lack of these basic skills, including mental (and physical) illness, crime, social unrest, poverty, even violence --and that taxpayers end up paying for. 3) Promote enviro, green climate action and research. Studies have proven a correlation between young people who enter these fields, and a higher degree of EQ, self confidence, esteem, interactive skills, and trust in tomorrow. (Who knew!)
Jay’s nonprofit organization, https://equipourkids.org (https://equipourkids.org/). focuses on parent and public awareness and activation to get SEL curriculum to every child and youth. It also helps build grassroots alliances of educators, SEL program providers and community groups.
Donations on the website help them get the word out. Volunteers to help do this are also so appreciated. Jay also asks that we widely share this link to the free Parent and Child Emotional Survival Toolkit they curated to help families deal with the COVID. https://bigeqcampaign.org/survival-kit

Or… anyone interested in serving on the board?
You can email Jay about any of this at [email protected] ([email protected])
FYI: their 60-second video about how SEL counters pandemic stresses https://youtu.be/LKYA6nlK0C8 (https://youtu.be/LKYA6nlK0C8)
And their video of young kids talking about what SEL has meant in their lives https://youtu.be/qBMJI82-QrM (https://youtu.be/qBMJI82-QrM)
Blessings on us each and all,
