Is it possible for someone to catch him and check to see if he's microchipped??

You can usually borrow a trap from the nearest animal shelter, or rent it from them for $1/day. If you put canned dog food in it, he'll probably walk right into the trap, and if he doesn't do so right away, you can put food out for him in the same place at the same time of day for a week and then put it in the trap in the same spot. Be sure you check the trap every few hours and have a blanket over it before you leave it overnight. Then leave the dog in the trap, take both of them to the shelter, and get him scanned for a microchip. If the shelter doesn't have the kind of scanner that will detect all companies' chips, you'll need to take him to a vet whose scanner will find chips of whatever brands the shelter's won't.

PLEASE go to moonrise's posting about an older cattle dog recently picked up by the animal control people and now in quarantine at airport shelter. She posted a picture so you can determine if this is same dog you saw or not.

It's not the same dog--although I did see a loose young black and white heeler-type dog a few evenings back. It's really distressing to keep seeing dogs on the loose. (My original post was to let anyone that was missing such a dog know where/when it might have been but, unfortunately, I think these dogs travel great distances and are all freaked out. It's very sad.)
