If you can't afford to buy the dog, what would you do when the dog needs medical attention, shots, neutering, spaying, annual checkups and anything else that happens you need to take to vet for????

I personally would NEVER GIVE AWAY A DOG TO A STRANGER. ANY PET, I would not give to a stranger. YOU NEVER KNOW, if they decide they don't want the dog for any reason, the poor animal is once again in a very bad situation.

helen scottThat's certainly one way of holding it. There is also the possibility of meeting the "stranger" a bit and seeing if you feel comfortable that the will treat the pet with love and kindness, and asking for their commitment to do so. Exactly how they do that is then up to to them. Love and compassion might not always look like going to the vet. :dogtong:

dear grandma, best for your daughter to go through a bona fide shelter or even better a rescuegroup, and ask them to reduce fee. the fees all good dogrescuers ask are because by the time an animal is ready for adooption from wherver we rescued it from, we have ususlaly spent quite a bit more than the adoption fee, esp. because we must deliver the animal altered to avoid any more animal suffering in the future. and it is also one way in wwhich we verify that a fmily can afford a pet, as they do tend to cost money along the way, no matter how well you treat them. also we have found that 'free pets' often are less valued, which seems to be a psychological thing in society. I am sure that a match for a mutually happy life can be found if she does goes through the aforementioned channels and makes sure she gets the right breed/sex/ age/temperament, and not just 'any free watchdog'. best, saskia

The SOnoma County animal shelter has dogs looking for good homes. Has your daughter investigated this option? Regardless of where she gets the dog, it will not be "free." All dogs need shots, spay/netuering, puppy/obedience classes and for safety, microchipping, in addition to proper nutrition, toys, and stimulation.
