The government published an order late Thursday allowing the use of hydroxychloroquine on patients after China donated more than 68,000 packs of the tablets to Russia.

It said the drug would be distributed to hospitals that are caring for patients who have tested positive for coronavirus or are suspected of having it. It said the drug’s safety and effectiveness will be monitored by the state health watchdog.

Hydroxychloroquine has been used for decades against malaria and is being tested worldwide against the virus along with another anti-malarial drug, chloroquine.

This is a huge stretch. There is currently no valid scientific evidence that the drug works for Covid-19. There are some anecdotal reports of cases where it has been used and some portion of patients have recovered. But there is, as of yet, no scientific, double blind controlled studies to show that it is even effective. Indeed- many in the scientific/medical world seem to be hopeful yet highly skeptical.

Of course, Trump has claimed he thinks this is going to be a miracle cure, yet Dr Fauci and the other doctors/scientists on the panel have expressed extreme caution.

It is worth noting too that the drug carries serious potential health risks of its own.

There are, indeed, a number of serious potential problems with hydroxychloroquine. There have been many recent deaths around the world because of it, and France has now banned it because of the risks. And, yes, there is NO valid evidence that it is helpful in COVID-19.

Listen up. The drug has been used many years for the treatment of malaria and lupus. So apparently the side effects have not been sufficient to cease its use. Moreover - the course of treatment for malaria is several weeks to months when used as a preventive for people entering malaria zones. The treatment for lupus is for a lifetime. Repeat - the drug is still in use and being prescribed daily for those illnesses. When used to treat coronavirus, the course of treatment is several days, far less than its traditional course of treatment and exposing the patient to far less risk of side effects. If 1 person dies from a side effect and 100 are brought back from the brink of death by it, do the freaking math.

The evidence for its effectiveness is beyond "anecdotal" at this point. You need to read more widely and from sources that challenge your orthodoxy because your parroting of the Democratic Party USA's talking points tells me you are living in a bubble of political correctness. Keeping this medicine from rescuing threatened demographics is criminal and will soon be recognized as such. It's that ding dong simple.

I don't trust the "experts" any longer. The original dire predictions for the pandemic have all been walked back numerous times. The foot dragging on HCL is borderline criminal. I'm watching the Swedish model, and if it turns out to have been the reaction of choice (likely), there's going to be a lot of new people in govt. this coming election.

Yah, who do you trust anymore? The VA study was done in retrospect, they sifted through the data after the fact. It wasn't a study done on purpose while the vets were being treated. There is no way to tell if it was the drug that killed them. It is contraindicated to give the drug to patients on a ventilator. No way of knowing if that was done. But there are just too many other reports coming in from around the world that say otherwise. In an emergency you go with what you got and fast. That's how an emergency dictates behavior.

Now there's another drug showing promise - Remdesivir, that worked for Ebola. The media will probably crap all over that as well, particularly if The Donald says it's good to go.
