Amen! It would be suicide to end the orders that require physical distancing prematurely, before the disease is contained and controlled. We are fortunate in Sonoma County. COVID-19 has had relatively little effect here for two reasons:
(1) We have low population density;
(2) Only a small number of travelers carrying the disease brought the virus here.
Yet even in Sonoma County, the graph of active cases on the county's "dashboard" demonstrates how effectively physical distancing has reduced contagion: The number of active cases has remained flat since April 7. The steep increase in active cases began flattening on April 2.I will leave predictions to those who are more knowledgeable or more reckless. However, even thousands of additional deaths would be morally repugnant.

As far as the alternatives - they have been enumerated enough here in this forum, on various threads. The gist of it is build up one's auto-immunity system and ingest herbs and vitamins that help boost the immune system. Prayer is an alternative - drawing near to the One who Creates us, and Renews the face of the earth.
Electro-therapy is an alternative - the benefits of nine volts of direct current passing through one's heart and lungs... Gargling with Baking Soda in filtered or colloidal water is an "alternative" means of dealing with the Plague. It worked in 1919... I could go on...

When I was in college, doing a report on Henry the VIII, I found an old book in the library. It was the oldest book I'd ever handled, hundreds of years old. I figured this would be a great source, and was pretty proud of using it. My professor pointed out otherwise. He reminded me that because it was that old, by definition there were newer sources that had taken its information into account, along with other different opinions, and come up with more nuanced and sophisticated analysis.

Yes, I do think Fauci has the best interests of mankind in his heart. Yes, we should wait for a vaccine (the alternative being?), and I think it would be best if a sufficient percentage of people were vaccinated to keep the outbreak under control. However I don't think people should be vaccinated against their will.

NPR is pretty mainstream. Corporations find it fairly unthreatening. So, yeah, don't expect fire-breathing lefty rhetoric from them. But I do think they think of themselves as fair, and they have much better reason to think that than someone like, say, Mercola and his acolytes who show no ability to challenge their own beliefs, ever.
And of course Bezos owns the WAPO, it's not hidden and the attempts he makes to distance himself are of course never going to be perfect. But I don't think there's any evidence that he treats it as a propaganda outlet, like Murdoch sort of does.
And again, there's nothing preventing people with any critical thinking skills at all from recognizing and accounting for their 'bias'. Those who earnestly proclaim their purity, their insight into the real facts, and the amazing clarity of their analysis of reality, are jokes and clowns with no self awareness at all.

I did some of my own 'homework', I admit it was low in sources I investigated, brief and not totally complete.t.
That being said; from what I have found so far, Dr. Francis Boyle is not a medical doctor. Dr. Francis Boyle is a lawyer that has a Juris Doctor (https://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Juris+doctorate) degree (J.D. or JD), also known as the Doctor of Jurisprudence degree (J.D., JD, D.Jur. or DJur), is a graduate-entry professional degree in law, which, is a requirement in most states in US to become a lawyer.
IMO, Dr. Francis Boyle (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Boyle) has strong opinions that he expresses with 'legalese' language. Dr. Francis Boyle's opinion on Covid-19 is not that of a virologist or anything of the sort so far as I can find... ...Therefore his opinion is closer to a lawyer who is supporting a particular opinion that is inherently biased.
There are allot of things that can and do appear to be a certain way on the surface when being 'viewed' from one angle or position.
Lawyers need to have there mind made up, in order to, in good-faith, represent one side or the other.

Dr. Francis Boyle may well have already made up his mind on what he claims is 'fact' about Covid-19. I think he did.

When it comes to examining the career and many accomplishments of Dr. Francis Boyle, i am a newbie. He is my age (actually I am three months older) and he has accomplished a lot. He has three degrees, Hotspring, besides the Law degree you cited. He has an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard. That is how he can sport the title, "Doctor." Capische? You put a spin on it to make it sound as if he is some poseur.
Anyway, I'll keep this brief. I found myself in the presence of a villain. - A lying, murdering hypocrite who sold his soul long ago for silver and gain. A practiced liar. The fact that Dr. Daszak has been the head of the "Wildlife Trust" in England makes this very plausible. I get it, he has high education and possesses more than enough degrees to use Dr in his title.
It was never in my mind to doubt that and I do not know enough about him to judge him as a "poser" or someone who is 'lying'; IE: a person has to either truly believe what they are saying, fooling themselves into believing the 'lie' or actually consciously know they are lying for it to be an actual lie.
Anyway, what I did mention previously is that none of the degrees sited are in the field of things closely related to virology etc..
There is an art to reading between the lines; which so many people in general are so uneducated on and just plane not good at, particularly in law and today's media spinning of politics.
Obviously Dr Boyle is, very educated and smart in his field of expertise. There is no argument from me in that regard.
I still believe that people who specialize in the fields of virology and viral pathology etc. are better educated in those fields than Dr Boyle regarding the origins and pathology of COVID-19. What they do with that knowledge is another thing.
There are undoubtedly Top Secret bio-laboratories that exist here in US and abroad that do study in the realm of potential 'bio-weaponry', or at least the particulars of exactly what they are doing in those labs that are 'known'.
I am reasonably sure that Dr Boyle does not have access to any actual 'Top Secret' information regarding COVED-19. Even if he did, he is not likely to be able to know what the scientific terminologies in the notes and journals all mean and what relevance it may or may not have, at least not without some help from someone who does understand all the up to date science in the particular fields necessary to do a scientific analysis and be able to make a definitive conclusion regarding 'bio-weaponry'.
To reiterate, Dr Boyle has made his 'analysis' based on using what he does know and believes he knows.

Mayacaman, after looking up Dr Peter Daszak, I understand why you don't trust Dr Peter Daszak's word about the lab in Wuhan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuhan_Institute_of_Virology) China.
I have some suspicion about the accuracy and possibly the truthfulness of his statement because it is so absolute yet stark:

There has been no significant proof presented as of me writing this that Dr Peter Daszak knew of any experiments that could have been done with any of the materials that the 'others' 'collected' that he worked with that outside of his workings there.
Just because Dr Peter Daszak does not know of any does not necessarily mean that it either did not or was not happen there at some point in time before the outbreak.
I analyze this like a suspicious person; say a maybe a (wannabe) lawyer.
I can deduce that Dr Peter Daszak's wording sounds like he is covering himself for something that has the potential complicate his life in future...

The 'was no' is likely to be, to Dr Peter Daszak, in his statement, is what I would consider a 'known known'.
On the other hand, the 'it's just not possible' part of the statement could, would, may, and/or suggest that there is or could be an 'unknown unknown' lurking around Dr Peter Daszak.
The issue presented is weather he was/is lying.
As far as I know, at this point in time, there is no proof-positive that Dr Peter Daszak knew of SARS-coronavirus-2 related research in the areas at the time he was working with the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
The fact that Dr. Daszak has been the head of the "Wildlife Trust" in England makes this very plausible. I am thinking that you may have juxtaposed what I said regarding Dr Boyle being a lawyer and not a virologist etc. and him seeing things through that perspective as being some sort of a dig on his intellect on my part. This is the sort of conversation I consider worth my time. "cyberanvil" - and some more centrist and self-defined 'leftists' and 'greens’ in this forum are practiced in the art of the two-liner that says little but provokes much, and I appreciate the fact that you aren’t doing that. Still, I find I must take the trouble of criticizing you for having missed a point or two of what is already on our plate.
I have been away, working for my Zen buddy who lives on the high point of the road midway between Healdsburg and the Coast, and was away from the internet during the interval, hence the delay in my response. Speaking of Zen, I think we should take a moment to appreciate the concept of "beginner's mind."
Most of us at this moment in time are newbie’s to the vast field of data that we must process in order to get up to speed on the parameters of the corona-virus crisis – and there is a lot of disinformation out there that we must deal with.
To my way of thinking, one must begin with the understanding that one does not know anything. -And one must read everything and be open to truth from all quarters, and then work out the contradictions. I learned that methodology from the late Mae Brussell of Carmel, and I consider myself to be one of her disciples.
Although I am not a Buddhist, I find that the four ko-tis of Buddhist logic are of immeasurable benefit in fully processing the piles of information at a time like this. -For Binary/Western -& even Hegelian/Western (trinary)- logic is an intellectual straitjacket.
In the first place, I want to thank Melissa Sophia Joy for bringing Professor Francis Boyle to my attention; caromia333 for bringing Dr. Peter Daszak into the picture; my brother-in-law for calling my attention to the article from Newsweek; and wisewomn for the article from the Washington Post.
Here we have a situation where we may practice Mae Brussell’s technique of reading everything & working out the contradictions. -And this is by no means 'everything'. It is information from only four sources. But each source contains a piece of the puzzle.
For the present, let us simply examine one term that professor Peter Boyle speaks of in his interviews with Dr. Joseph Mercola – the phenomena of “gain-of-function” research on corona-viruses that originate in bat caves in China. He has a lot to say about it – none of it very charitable or especially forgiving. He also says categorically that the BSL-4 Laboratory in Wuhan, China is a “Bio-weapons Lab” He does not mince words.
Dr. Peter Daszak, on the other hand, failed to mention to Amy Goodman’s listeners on Democracy Now! “O, by the way, I was doing “gain-of-function” research on Corona-viruses from bat caves in China at the lab in Wuhan.” –A big glitch. But the journalist, Fred Guterl, in his article (https://www.newsweek.com/dr-fauci-backed-controversial-wuhan-lab-millions-us-dollars-risky-coronavirus-research-1500741) in Newsweek fills in that gap:

“The cable tells us that there have long been concerns about the possibility of the threat to public health that came from this lab’s research, if it was not being adequately conducted and protected,” he said.
There are similar concerns about the nearby Wuhan Center for Disease Control and Prevention lab, which operates at biosecurity level 2, a level significantly less secure than the level-4 standard claimed by the Wuhan Insititute of Virology lab, Xiao said. That’s important because the Chinese government still refuses to answer basic questions about the origin of the novel coronavirus while suppressing any attempts to examine whether either lab was involved.
Sources familiar with the cables said they were meant to sound an alarm about the grave safety concerns at the WIV lab, especially regarding its work with bat coronaviruses. The embassy officials were calling for more U.S. attention to this lab and more support for it, to help it fix its problems.
“The idea that it was just a totally natural occurrence is circumstantial. The evidence it leaked from the lab is circumstantial. Right now, the ledger on the side of it leaking from the lab is packed with bullet points and there’s almost nothing on the other side,” the official said.

There is nothing in Article I of the Constitution that grants to Congress this kind of surveillance authority over American citizens and residents. States retain the police power to enforce health law; this would be an infringement on states’ powers.
We have a long and sad history of police powers being used disproportionately and abusively against minorities, including minorities based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender and sexual orientation. “Vaccines are both effective and safe,” Schiff wrote. “There is no evidence to suggest that vaccines cause life-threatening or disabling disease.”
This was misinformation. I would very dearly like to know the truth about vaccines. How can I possibly know the truth if my bias is against them, hence looking for evidence to support my already made up opinion on vaccines?
I have more than one friend who have suffered most of their lives because of polio (vaccine came out right after they contracted the disease). What about small pox?
Traces of aluminum or other questionable substances in vaccines...?? Are they indeed harmful in these small dosages? Why do they need to be the vaccine at all?
You may read this and sense "I am pro vaccine". Nope, not the case. I simply want the truth. Most importantly I will not approach this with a deep conviction of suspicion about government (controlled by corporations). There obviously is some truth to this statement yet "do we throw the baby out with the bathwater"? Does Bill and Melinda Gates have mysterious dark or controlling motives to all their work in Africa and elsewhere around the world?
What I am really saying here is how can each of us be an investigative citizen without first going down to the basement of our being and sincerely connect with the early events that in a fell swoop set the stage (beliefs) for filtering so many current actions and events with suspicion. Dave Lee, If one sincerely desires to know the truth about anything, one must start with an empty mind, free of opinions & also as bias-free as one can possibly make it be. Then -and this is important- one must seek with the whole heart. Whatever it is that one wants to know, it is accessible, and may be known. Then, one must learn to work out the contradictions in the meanings embedded in the messages of the multitudes of voices, all shouting in the same storm.
If you really want to know the "truth about vaccinations" - the positive as well as the negative - I suggest you begin by mining the posts on this very thread; reading them, opening & studying the links. Here is as good as any place to make a beginning.

The truth about vaccines is complicated. There are many, smallpox is the star, this disease has been eliminated. Polio is still around, despite the latest Gates efforts. The other extreme is clamidia, aka gardicil, withdrawn? And now we have sarsviris 2. Is there a vaccine for sarsviris 1? No. It was contained and eliminated. Though far more deadly than 2, far less transmissive. And both are corona viruses, there are three of these which cause common cold. A vaccine for colds is like inventing a better mousetrap, hasn't happened yet despite many efforts.
So given that covid 19 is destroying world economy in all nation states, any vaccine will be pushed hard. Vaccine researchers love to claim that immunity from vaccine is greater than immunity from surviving disease. Research claiming this is government propaganda. So suspicion of biases is an important part of seeking truth. My favorite way to understand vaccine politics is a quote from character Dr McCoy in an early startrec movie, save us from 20th century medicine. Western medicine is a history of mistakes creating learning. I remember an old argument with my banned by berry brother miles. I supported the position that easily communicated disease was reduced far more by sanitation than vaccine. He's my brother, so he argued with me.

COVID-19 science should have set a new standard for vaccine safety research. Instead, it has lowered the bar. Hear this well: COVID-19 vaccines are not – and never were – a fait accompli. Unless the science being conducted on COVID-19 vaccines is held to the normative standards for ethical clinical research, no ethical physician, parent, or politician should support their general use – regardless of ACIP, CDC, WHO and AMA, AAP and FDA expected rubber-stamp recommendations. The regulatory system we have is fatally flawed and must be replaced with one free from profit motive. I call this Plan B, and I and my supporters will from this day make every effort to insure these obsolete and captured organizations’ impairment of bona fide evidence-based medicine in the US and abroad is brought to an end.
Most medical professionals and parents believe that vaccines are the best way forward to protect children from disease caused by infectious pathogenic agents. In a recent article (https://www.gatesnotes.com/Health/What-you-need-to-know-about-the-COVID-19-vaccine), Bill Gates reports that he suspects ”the COVID-19 vaccine will become part of the routine newborn immunization schedule.”
Oxford has announced (http://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2020-05-22-oxford-covid-19-vaccine-begin-phase-iiiii-human-trials) that its Phase II COVID-19 vaccine studies will include a group of children aged between 5-12 years. Given the low susceptibility of children to illness from SARS-CoV-2 infection, the inclusion of children is, according to Oxford, warranted so the differences between their immune systems and those of adults challenged with SARS-CoV-2 antigens can be better understood.
Any translational scientist or bioethicist should, on the grounds of elementary first principles of the ethics of clinical research, object vehemently to the inclusion of children in COVID-19 vaccine studies. Here, I lay those principles out in the current context.
1. There are no potential benefits to the child enrollees being experimented upon.The overall infection case fatality rate of SARS-CoV-2 is estimated by CDC at 0.26% (https://web.archive.org/web/20200521203901/https:/www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/planning-scenarios.html). The risk of serious illness and death from SARS-CoV-2 infection in children is effectively zero. In fact, risk of serious/critical illness and death is isolated to known groups of individuals with diabetes or cardiovascular disease, and the elderly, and those with certain co-morbidities (see CDC: Groups at Higher Risk for Severe Illness.)

There is, therefore, no potential benefit to any child who would be enrolled in COVID-19 vaccine studies, and the trial would only serve to benefit others. This is highly unethical.
There is also no expected population-level beneficial effect from the Oxford vaccine; all rhesus monkeys, vaccinated or not, with their vaccine, were still susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Thus, vaccination to prevent infection and transmission cannot be a justification for that particular vaccine: the virus should be expected to be freely transmitted throughout the population until it finds the immunocompromised and those at risk of serious and critical illness.
2. No free, prior and informed consent on risk is possible – for any COVID-19 human subject of any age. In SARS, MERS and other coronavirus vaccine research, unacceptably high risk of coronavirus disease enhancement was reported in animals vaccinated against the coronaviruses, and re-challenged with infection See “SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine Recommended Readings (https://jameslyonsweiler.com/2020/02/07/2019-ncov-vaccine-recommended-readings/)“. This critical animal safety study phase led to the termination of the development of SARS and MERS vaccines. That is not a failure of science, it is a success. The problem of disease enhancement from coronavirus vaccines has been misleadingly referenced as “immune enhancement”, a term that is an inexact reference to disease enhancement. It has been re-labeled “Pathogenic Priming (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2589909020300186)”, a phrase that focuses the liability on the act of the exposure, not the passive liability on the human immune system (Lyons-Weiler, 2020 (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2589909020300186)).
The knowledge of whether disease enhancement will occur due to exposure to SARS-CoV-2 proteins in a vaccine will have to be gleaned from Phase 2 or 3 human subjects studies. The participants of such studies at any age cannot provide free, prior and informed consent – as required by US Federal Regulations – if participants do not know of the general possibility of risk, and worse, the specific likelihood of downstream serious/critical illness or death upon re-exposure.The all-important Phase 1 animal safety studies were specifically skipped prior to the Phase 2 trials of COVID-19 vaccines. This was done with the full knowledge of NIAID’s Anthony Fauci, who is partnering with Moderna on their RNA vaccine (See Live Science: “Researchers fast-track coronavirus vaccine by skipping key animal testing first (https://www.livescience.com/coronavirus-vaccine-trial-no-animal-testing.html)” . Vaccinologist Paul Offit has called for skipping Phase 2 or combining Phase 2 and 3 trials on the basis of his perception of the seriousness COVID-19 (https://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2020/05/18/early-results-from-moderna-coronavirus-vaccine-trial-show-participants-developed-antibodies-against-the-virus/). Due to a lack of new cases in the UK, Oxford is relocating its human vaccine experimentation trials to Brazil, where pathogenic priming will likely show its face because, according to Forbes (https://www.forbes.com/sites/kenrapoza/2020/06/04/brazil-to-be-first-to-test-oxfords-covid-19-vaccine/#fd0c67c3212b),
“As part of the Oxford trial’s design, participants will receive the vaccine and then continue being exposed to the virus normally in their day-to-day work.”
This means the effect of exposure to the virus following vaccination – and potential pathogenic priming is specifically being sought in human experimentation on a population in a developing country. Why not the UK? Is this imperial medical exploitation? This outsourcing of risk is unethical, and the lack of available clinical cases in some countries, including the UK begs the question of the plausibility and need of a COVID-19 vaccine program altogether.
3. Vaccines for Everyone At All Costs – Including Any Risk.In its publication, the Gates Foundation is apparently comfortable with COVID-19 vaccines being “brutal”, citing the experience with the polio vaccine leaving a large percentage of its recipients unable to go to school or work. The message “It might not be a perfect vaccine yet—and that’s okay” is a self-authorized permission slip to proceed not only to research on these vaccines – but also to begin production of billions of doses of the vaccine prior to knowledge of efficacy and safety.
Treating vaccine safety science as a token step toward FDA approval
We don’t yet know how “brutal” a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine might turn out to be. Gate’s message appears to be “COVID-19 vaccine regardless of any harm”. Gates is treating vaccine safety science as a token step toward FDA approval. Something is amiss with Gates’ moral algorithm: he favors benefit to a few at the potential high cost to the many.
One participant in the Moderna Phase 1 trial revealed his serious reaction to the vaccine. STAT News reported (https://www.statnews.com/2020/05/26/moderna-vaccine-candidate-trial-participant-severe-reaction/) that, in spite of high fever and fainting, he is still, most unscientifically, a “believer”. Science is about empirical knowledge, not faith. It is unacceptable that we do not know whether he and all other participants in the early trial of Moderna’s vaccine study are now more susceptible to serious and critical illness or death from SARS-CoV-2 infection. This ignorance is not due to a lack of opportunity to know; Moderna has boasted about its animal studies which demonstrated antibody production. They had or have vaccinated animals; whether they simply have not challenged those animals with SARS-CoV-2 viral infection to check for pathogenic priming, or have done so but have not made those results public is unclear. If there was no pathogenic priming, they surely would have made the results public.
COVID-19 did not spread in the US due to a lack of a vaccine; it spread due to CDC’s botched strategy for early containment via testing and tracking: On January 16, 2020, CDC career scientists refused to adopt a validated test developed by Germany, and instead developed and shipped a flawed SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR testing kit, which led to the spread of COVID-19 due to false negative results. This is why SARS-CoV-2 spread so fast in the US.

if you are wondering about the credentials of the author of this article, here they are: ...they're good, and beyond that, his critiques are focused and narrow. He doesn't (or at least, not in the posted excerpt he doesn't) stray into speculation as to motivations and hidden agendas. This factor alone makes this citation unusual for this thread. We get to speculate on the motivations and causes, which is as it should be!
so to actually talk about his points, which I tend to agree with:

no informed consent is possible. He makes a clear case there too. Debatable whether this is unique to this situation, but a good point.
those promoting testing are willing to accept brutal (to use his term) consequences. He states that factually, backs it and avoids imputing evil motives that aren't themselves documented.
I won't bother to go into whether such evil motives exist. I tend to think they don't. But I do agree with him, there seems to be too much of a willingness to accept massive collateral damage, or at least the risk of same, in the race for a vaccine. Personally I think that's because those behind the research see the disease as worse than the cure, but I'm not so sure it won't be a cure worse than the disease. Those pushing the vaccine development of course know more than I do about it, but I can acknowledge that and still be unwilling to accept their judgement of what's prudent and even on what's ethical.

Children’s Health Defense Responds to Accusation
of Spreading “Misinformation” on Facebook
Children’s Health Defense has been accused of spreading vaccine “misinformation”,
but it’s the government and major media who are deceiving the public.

In November 2019, the Washington Post and other major news media accused Children’s Health Defense (CHD) of using Facebook advertisements to spread “misinformation” about vaccines. The basis for these accusations, which have since continued, is a study published in the prestigious medical journal Vaccine that named CHD as a top buyer of vaccine-related Facebook ads. What the media failed to inform the public, however, is that the government-funded authors of this study failed to identify even a single example of a Facebook ad from CHD that contained any misinformation.
CHD has now published a detailed response (https://childrenshealthdefense.org/ebook-sign-up-how-censorship-is-redefining-informed-consent-as-misinformation/) to this baseless accusation showing that the real story here is how inconveniently truthful information about vaccines is being censored and how our right to informed consent is under assault.
The authors of the study did not trouble themselves to determine the truthfulness of vaccine-related Facebook advertisements. Instead, they simply categorized any ads that did not conform with the public policy goal of sustaining or increasing vaccination rates as “anti-vaccine”. Under their adopted criteria, even the simple act of advocating the right to informed consent constituted “anti-vaccine” behavior.
Then the authors lazily and dogmatically equated anything “anti-vaccine” with “misinformation”, which label they used euphemistically to mean any information, no matter how factual and well-grounded in science, that might cause people to question the wisdom of strictly complying with the vaccine recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
By this means, the study authors ludicrously equated advocacy of the right to informed consent with the propagation of “misinformation” about vaccines.
Ironically, while failing to provide any evidence to support their accusation against Children’s Health Defense, the study authors presented an example of an ad categorized as “pro-vaccine” that did misinform Facebook users. That ad promoted the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine as proven to prevent cancer even though—as the authors of a study published in January 2020 in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine pointed out—none of the clinical trials used by the manufacturers to obtain licensure were designed to determine the vaccine’s effectiveness against cervical cancer, and whether the vaccine prevents cancer remains unknown.
The authors of the Vaccine study, however, failed to identify that ad as having misled Facebook users—which is unsurprising since their effective definition of “misinformation” precluded them from doing so.
They also declared no conflicts of interest despite their study having been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which itself develops vaccine technology and licenses it for use by pharmaceutical corporations. For example, the NIH patented technology that was sold under a co-exclusive license to Merck and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) for use in the development of their respective HPV vaccines.
While media reports about the Vaccine study characterized any discussion of corruption within the government and medical establishment as “conspiracy theory”, in fact, even the US Congress has acknowledged this problem within agencies like the CDC and Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the existence of pervasive corruption and conflicts of interest within the scientific community and the medical establishment is recognized in the medical literature as an uncontroversial fact.
Even more preposterously, media reports characterized so-called “anti-vaccine” groups as part of an “industry” that has “more resources” than public vaccine policy proponents. While one of the study’s authors acknowledged in an interview that these groups reached relatively large Facebook audiences in terms of just “a few thousand dollars” in ad spend, their own data showed that “pro-vaccine” ad buyers both bought more ads and collectively had higher budgets. A top “pro-vaccine” buyer, for example, appeared to have been the CDC, which ran “HPV Vaccine is Cancer Prevention” ads with budgets of up to $50,000.
Children’s Health Defense, in its efforts to combat government and media misinformation about vaccines and the erosion of our fundamental human rights, is standing up against the trillion-dollar global pharmaceutical industry, including a global vaccine market that’s estimated in the tens of billions of dollars.
In 2016, Big Pharma is estimated to have spent nearly $30 billion in marketing in the US, primarily targeting medical professionals, including through ads in peer-reviewed journals and direct-to-physician payments. Approximately $6 billion was spent on direct-to-consumer advertising, with pharmaceutical ads representing an estimated 8 percent of total ad revenue for major news networks like CBS, ABC, NBC, and CNN.
Additionally, the industry has been shifting its focus from television and print ads to online ads. Top beneficiaries of this shift include WebMD and Medscape, which Google often features in its “answer box” for health-related search queries. Facebook, too, has been competing for pharma ad dollars, by rolling out a new feature enabling pharmaceutical companies to promote their products with Facebook ads while remaining in compliance with regulations that require the disclosure of important safety information, which is accomplished by having the safety information appear in a scrolling section featured below the ad.
And, of course, with Big Pharma spending tens of millions of dollars lobbying Congress each year, it’s little wonder that we’ve seen efforts to censor information and eliminate choice. For example, Congressman Adam Schiff last year sent letters to the CEOs of Facebook, Google, and Amazon calling on these companies to do more to stop the spread of what he euphemistically called vaccine “misinformation”, by which he simply meant any information, no matter how factual, that could cause parents “to disregard the advice of their children’s physician and public health experts and decline to follow the recommended vaccination schedule.”
In adopting the same euphemistic use of language, the authors of the Vaccine study were simply following Congressman Schiff’s example—just as when the major media misinform the public about what the science tells us about vaccines, they are simply following the example set by the CDC.
In the face of efforts to manufacture consent for government policies through deceitful propaganda, censor truthful information about vaccines, and eliminate parents’ ability to meaningfully exercise their right to informed consent, Children’s Health Defense is on the front lines, speaking out and standing up for health freedom, including through litigation.
Unlike the authors of the Vaccine study, CHD is not funded by taxpayers’ dollars. Unlike the major media, it is also not funded by pharmaceutical ad dollars. Far from being backed by some powerful “industry”, CHD’s grassroots efforts would not be possible without the voluntary financial contributions of readers like you.

A Columbia Journalism Review expose (https://www.cjr.org/criticism/gates-foundation-journalism-funding.php) reveals that, to control global journalism, Bill Gates has steered over $250 million to the BBC, NPR, NBC, Al Jazeera, ProPublica, National Journal, The Guardian, the New York Times, Univision, Medium, the Financial Times, The Atlantic, the Texas Tribune, Gannett, Washington Monthly, Le Monde, Center for Investigative Reporting, Pulitzer Center, National Press Foundation, International Center for Journalists, and a host of other groups. To conceal his influence, Gates also funneled unknown sums via subgrants (https://www.cjr.org/criticism/gates-foundation-journalism-funding.php) for contracts to other press outlets.

Journalism’s Gates keepers

</small>Last August, NPR (https://www.npr.org/2019/08/05/747610085/in-seattle-a-move-across-town-could-be-a-path-out-of-poverty) profiled a Harvard-led experiment to help low-income families find housing in wealthier neighborhoods, giving their children access to better schools and an opportunity to “break the cycle of poverty.” According to researchers cited in the article, these children could see $183,000 greater earnings over their lifetimes—a striking forecast for a housing program still in its experimental stage.
If you squint as you read the story, you’ll notice that every quoted expert is connected to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which helps fund the project. And if you’re really paying attention, you’ll also see the editor’s note at the end of the story, which reveals that NPR itself receives funding from Gates.
NPR’s funding from Gates “was not a factor in why or how we did the story,” reporter Pam Fessler says, adding that her reporting went beyond the voices quoted in her article. The story, nevertheless, is one of hundreds NPR has reported about the Gates Foundation or the work it funds, including myriad favorable pieces written from the perspective of Gates or its grantees.
And that speaks to a larger trend—and ethical issue—with billionaire philanthropists’ bankrolling the news. The Broad Foundation, whose philanthropic agenda includes promoting charter schools, at one point funded part of the LA Times’ (https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/2015/10/29/fd03d240-79cc-11e5-b9c1-f03c48c96ac2_story.html)reporting on education. Charles Koch has made charitable donations to journalistic institutions such as the Poynter Institute, as well as to news organizations such as the Daily Caller News Foundation, that support his conservative politics. And the Rockefeller Foundation funds Vox’s Future Perfect (https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2020/2/11/21133298/bill-gates-melinda-gates-money-foundation), a reporting project that examines the world “through the lens of effective altruism” (https://www.voxmedia.com/about-vox-media/2018/10/15/17969758/vox-future-perfect)—often looking at philanthropy.
As philanthropists increasingly fill in the funding gaps at news organizations—a role that is almost certain to expand in the media downturn following the coronavirus pandemic—an underexamined worry is how this will affect the ways newsrooms report on their benefactors. Nowhere does this concern loom larger than with the Gates Foundation, a leading donor to newsrooms and a frequent subject of favorable news coverage.
I recently examined nearly twenty thousand charitable grants the Gates Foundation had made through the end of June and found more than $250 million going toward journalism. Recipients included news operations like the BBC, NBC, Al Jazeera, ProPublica, National Journal, The Guardian, Univision, Medium, the Financial Times, The Atlantic, the Texas Tribune, Gannett, Washington Monthly, Le Monde, and the Center for Investigative Reporting; charitable organizations affiliated with news outlets, like BBC Media Action and the New York Times’ Neediest Cases Fund; media companies such as Participant, whose documentary Waiting for “Superman” supports Gates’s agenda on charter schools; journalistic organizations such as the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, the National Press Foundation, and the International Center for Journalists; and a variety of other groups creating news content or working on journalism, such as the Leo Burnett Company, an ad agency that Gates commissioned to create a “news site” to promote the success of aid groups. In some cases, recipients say they distributed part of the funding as subgrants to other journalistic organizations—which makes it difficult to see the full picture of Gates’s funding into the fourth estate.
The foundation even helped fund a 2016 report (https://www.americanpressinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/The-ethical-terrain-of-nonprofit-journalism.pdf)from the American Press Institute that was used to develop guidelines (https://www.americanpressinstitute.org/publications/nonprofit-funding-guidance/) on how newsrooms can maintain editorial independence from philanthropic funders. A top-level finding: “There is little evidence that funders insist on or have any editorial review.” Notably, the study’s underlying survey data showed that nearly a third of funders reported having seen at least some content they funded before publication.
Gates’s generosity appears to have helped foster an increasingly friendly media environment for the world’s most visible charity. Twenty years ago, journalists scrutinized Bill Gates’s initial foray into philanthropy as a vehicle (https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB1029180416481589035) to enrich his software company, or a PR exercise (https://www.theguardian.com/theguardian/1999/aug/25/guardianleaders1) to salvage his battered reputation following Microsoft’s bruising antitrust battle with the Department of Justice. Today, the foundation is most often the subject of soft profiles and glowing editorials describing its good works.
During the pandemic, news outlets have widely looked to Bill Gates as a public health expert on covid—even though Gates has no medical training and is not a public official. PolitiFact (https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2020/may/14/facebook-posts/no-evidence-gates-foundation-will-profit-coronavir/) and USA Today (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/05/14/fact-check-anthony-fauci-bill-gates-wont-profit-remdesivir/3120063001/) (run by the Poynter Institute and Gannett, respectively—both of which have received funds from the Gates Foundation) have even used their fact-checking platforms to defend Gates from “false conspiracy theories” and “misinformation,” like the idea that the foundation has financial investments in companies developing covid vaccines and therapies. In fact, the foundation’s website and most recent tax forms clearly show investments in such companies, including Gilead (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/22/health/gilead-remdesivir-coronavirus-nebulizer.html) and CureVac (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/15/world/europe/cornonavirus-vaccine-us-germany.html).
In the same way that the news media has given Gates an outsize voice in the pandemic, the foundation has long used its charitable giving to shape the public discourse on everything from global health to education to agriculture—a level of influence that has landed Bill Gates on Forbes (https://www.forbes.com/powerful-people/list/)’s list of the most powerful people in the world. The Gates Foundation can point to important charitable accomplishments over the past two decades—like helping drive down polio and putting new funds into fighting malaria—but even these efforts have drawn expert detractors who say that Gates may actually be introducing harm (https://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/04/health/04mala.html), or distracting (https://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/01/health/01polio.html) us from more important, lifesaving public health projects.
From virtually any of Gates’s good deeds, reporters can also find problems with the foundation’s outsize power (https://www.thenation.com/article/society/bill-gates-foundation-philanthropy/), if they choose to look. But readers don’t hear these critical voices in the news as often or as loudly as Bill and Melinda’s. News about Gates these days is often filtered through the perspectives of the many academics, nonprofits, and think tanks that Gates funds. Sometimes it is delivered to readers by newsrooms with financial ties to the foundation.
The Gates Foundation declined multiple interview requests for this story and would not provide its own accounting of how much money it has put toward journalism.
In response to questions sent via email, a spokesperson for the foundation said that a “guiding principle” of its journalism funding is “ensuring creative and editorial independence.” The spokesperson also noted that, because of financial pressures in journalism, many of the issues the foundation works on “do not get the in-depth, consistent media coverage they once did.… When well-respected media outlets have an opportunity to produce coverage of under-researched and under-reported issues, they have the power to educate the public and encourage the adoption and implementation of evidence-based policies in both the public and private sectors.”
As CJR was finalizing its fact check of this article, the Gates Foundation offered a more pointed response: “Recipients of foundation journalism grants have been and continue to be some of the most respected journalism outlets in the world.… The line of questioning for this story implies that these organizations have compromised their integrity and independence by reporting on global health, development, and education with foundation funding. We strongly dispute this notion.”

The full scope of Gates’s giving to the news media remains unknown because the foundation only publicly discloses money awarded through charitable grants, not through contracts. In response to questions, Gates only disclosed one contract—[I]Vox (https://www.vox.com/ad/17846116/human-capital-africa-education-world-population)’s (https://www.vox.com/ad/17846116/human-capital-africa-education-world-population)—but did describe how some of this contract money is spent: producing sponsored content, and occasionally funding “non-media nonprofit entities to support efforts such as journalist trainings, media convenings, and attendance at events.”
In the same way that the news media has given Gates an outsize voice in the pandemic, the foundation has long used its charitable giving to shape the public discourse on everything from global health to education to agriculture.
Over the years, reporters have investigated the apparent blind spots in how the news media covers the Gates Foundation, though such reflective reporting has waned in recent years. In 2015, Vox (https://www.vox.com/2015/6/10/8760199/gates-foundation-criticism) ran an article examining the widespread uncritical journalistic coverage surrounding the foundation—coverage that comes even as many experts and scholars raise red flags. Vox didn’t cite Gates’s charitable giving to newsrooms as a contributing factor, nor did it address Bill Gates’s month-long stint as guest editor for The Verge, a Vox subsidiary, earlier that year. Still, the news outlet did raise critical questions about journalists’ tendency to cover the Gates Foundation as a dispassionate charity instead of a structure of power.

So, what's the alternative? I don't demonize the philanthropists, though I may not support their politics. I sort-of trust them to keep at arm's length, and I know who they are. I'm grateful that Bezos is keeping the Washington Post alive; at least one thing he's doing is beneficial to the world. Can't say that for the rest of his business, IMHO. The biggest problem with these media moguls is that we're getting homogenization, and the economies of scale are squeezing out many more unique or at least relevant voices. We'll see if the various disasters, from covid to global warming to political insanity, is creating an economy where only the big players can survive at all. That to me is the story, not some imagined malevolent conspiracy hiding behind the philanthropy of the winners.

The only thing the government needs to make people into slaves is fear.”

This is something that sleazy Journals have been known to do. Because, when a Tabloid like the "Daily Beast" - which has been taking the Jeffrey Epstein / Ghislaine Maxwell spectacle to town - publishes a dangle like this, focusing on one single, salacious aspect of the article in the Wall Street Journal, you may be sure that they are signalling to Bill Gates that:
A. They know a little more about the topic than they are telling at the moment.
B. They are perfectly willing and able to spill it...

COVID’s Deadly Toll on Youth: A Sharp Rise in Suicides
Young people may be the least likely to get sick from COVID, but the impact of lockdowns
and school closures has created an alarming spike in suicides among children and teens.
Almost one year after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic (https://childrenshealthdefense.org/defender_category/covid/), one of the worst consequences may not be directly caused by the virus, but rather by school closures, isolation and lockdown measures that have sent the suicide rate among children in the U.S. and other countries surging (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7500342/#bib0030).
Since the pandemic began in March of 2020 and schools closed their doors, reports of suicidal thoughts, attempts and cries for help among children have increased significantly (https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6945a3.htm) across the nation, according to numerous studies and media reports.
As the New York Times reported (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/24/us/politics/student-suicides-nevada-coronavirus.html) earlier this month, between March 16 and Dec. 31, 2020, 18 suicides were reported in Clark County, Nevada — more than double what the district experienced the prior year. The Clark County school district also received more than 3,100 alerts via an early warning system set up by the district in July to monitor the mental health episodes of its students.
“When we started to see the uptick in children taking their lives, we knew it wasn’t just the COVID numbers we need to look at anymore,” the Clark County district’s superintendent, Jesus Jara, told the Times.
In the Texas metropolitan area researchers analyzed the results (https://www.aappublications.org/news/2020/12/16/pediatricssuicidestudy121620) of 12,827 teens who completed a suicide risk screening, and found that 3.5% of those screened reported suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
A national survey (https://www.chegg.org/covid-19-mental-health-2020) of 1,000 currently enrolled high school and college students conducted jointly by two organizations — Chegg.org (https://www.chegg.org/), a national advocacy, fundraising and student research group, and the Born This Way Foundation (https://bornthisway.foundation/), which focuses on supporting the emotional and mental health of adolescents — found that 5% of the students (https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/938065#vp_2) reported having made a suicide attempt during the pandemic.
A recent Washington Post article (https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/11/23/covid-pandemic-rise-suicides/) highlighted the pandemic’s effect on the already alarming suicide trend among teens and young adults, which increased 56% between 2007 and 2018.
According to an August 2020 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) survey (https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6932a1.htm#T2_down) on the pandemic’s impact on mental and emotional health, the youngest people surveyed reported experiencing the highest rates of anxiety, depression and other mental health problems. Three in four reported struggling with at least one mental health issue, according to the CDC.
This coincides with a November report (https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6945a3.htm) by the CDC that analyzed emergency room visits in children under 18 during the pandemic. Results showed that although the number of overall emergency room visits fell during 2020, the number of mental health-related visits increased. Data analyzed from the CDC’s National Syndromic Surveillance Program from Jan. 1 through Oct. 17, 2020, and compared to the same period in 2019 showed a 31% increase in mental health issues among adolescents 12 – 17-years-old.
An article by NPR (https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2021/01/18/953581851/ive-tried-everything-pandemic-has-cut-options-for-kids-with-mental-illness) sheds light on the CDC findings. Not only are doctors seeing more emergency room visits for mental health issues, but more children are waiting in emergency departments for in-patient care. This is due to the lack of outpatient services during the pandemic, a shortage of psychiatrists and therapists trained to work with children and school closures. Even if a child can get care, they may not be able to obtain follow-up care near their home, Dr. C.J. Glawe, who leads the Psychiatric Crisis Department at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, told NPR.
The authors of a letter to the Elsevier Public Health Emergency Coalition (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7500342/#bib0030) summarizing some of the latest research on the pandemic’s impact on mental health point out that the pandemic has forced students from inside the classroom and outside with their friends, to remote learning and isolation within their homes. Children now attend classes online and spend the remainder of their time watching TV or on the internet. Many have faced the cancellation of sports, prom and graduation, experienced the loss of loved ones from the disease, and face undue stress and uncertainty about their futures.
The cumulative effect of all of these losses can lead to psycho-social problems, such as “internet addiction, lower self-esteem and low interest in physical activities,” the authors said, adding that “cyberbullying and anxiety while on social networking platforms, have also taken their toll on their mental health.”
The media is taking note. As the New York Times reported (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/24/us/politics/student-suicides-nevada-coronavirus.html), a 14-year-old boy killed himself in Maryland because he had “given up” when his school district did not open in the fall. An 11-year-old boy shot himself during a zoom class, and a teenager in Maine succumbed to the isolation of the pandemic. Anthony Orr, 18, drove his car into a parking lot and ended his life in August after experiencing a disrupted senior year.
Jara told the Times that Clark County’s youngest victim, only 9, left a note saying he had nothing to look forward to.
When schools didn’t open in the fall, parents began to speak out. Brad Hunstable told the Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/11/23/covid-pandemic-rise-suicides/) he believes COVID killed his son by driving him to the point where he made an “impulsive act that he could not take back.” His school had closed, he couldn’t play sports and his only connection to friends was through a game called Fortnite. Hunstable urged other parents to talk openly with their children about mental health and founded a nonprofit encouraging schools to do the same.
According to the Post, some parents and experts are concerned school districts are not doing enough to reach out to students, that there is not enough funding being directed towards mental health and the government is not taking this “side-effect” of the pandemic seriously.
Although statistics for the 2020 year have not yet been compiled, professionals speculate (https://childrenshealthdefense.org/defender/mental-health-system-fails-kids-covid/) the rising suicide rate among children is due to not having access to mental health services in schools, school closures, hopelessness, increased anxiety and stress, and students feeling disconnected from their peers.
Other countries with strict lockdowns and school closures are seeing similar rises in suicides. LaCorte News reported (https://www.lacortenews.com/n/australia-projects-more-suicides-from-lockdowns-than-coronavirus-deaths) that Ian Hickie, Australia’s former health commissioner and head of the Brain and Mind Centre, projected the number of annual deaths by suicide in Australia will rise from 3,000 to up to 4,500, with young people comprising nearly half that number.
In the UK, suicide and injury or poisoning of undetermined intent was the leading cause of death for both males and females ages 20 to 34 before the pandemic, according to an Office for National Statistics report (https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/causesofdeath/articles/leadingcausesofdeathuk/2001to2018) covering the years 2001 to 2018.
“Suicide is already the leading cause of death in young people in England,” Ellen Townsend, a psychology professor at the University of Nottingham told Express (https://www.express.co.uk/comment/expresscomment/1391411/coronavirus-latest-children-mental-health-school-closures-lockdown), “and we need to prioritise them now to prevent further tragedy. Policy makers must do what is right by children and get them back to normal as soon as possible…”
Townsend added that the loneliness from English lockdowns is as damaging to health as smoking and obesity and is directly associated with suicidal thinking.
She said “Generation Lockdown” will suffer unnecessarily for years to come. “It is incontrovertible that young people are suffering overwhelming harm to their mental health in this crisis.”
