SFGate: Out of hand sanitizer? Here's how to make your own

The CDC says sanitizer is only effective if you cover your hands thoroughly and then allow them to dry. Squirting a few drops into your palms and then wiping your hands won't help much.

All credible sources say that scrubbing your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water, for at least 20 seconds, is more effective than using hand sanitizers.

While this is true there are many instances when one is out in public where cleaning ones hand would be a good idea but a bathroom is not available. I wouldn't say it's either or...

It's basically just a 1/3rds Aloe Vera Gel to 2/3 99% Isopropyl alcohol mixture. You can add essential oils if you wish.

Frustratingly - most Isopropyl alcohol sold locally is 70%, and even at drug stores it can be hard to find above ~90%.

FWIW... the cannabis grow shops sell 99% by the gallon.... (and while I haven't checked recently, buying by the gallon isn't that much more expensive then buying by the pint/half pint at the grocery/drug stores. )

Sometimes we're not in a place that's convenient for hand washing, so a sanitizer is the next best thing. :wink2:

I found 91% CVS brand several months ago when I needed it for "alcohol ink painting". They may not have it now. I didn't know that cannabis shops sold it, so thanks for that tip, which many non-cannabis users/growers may not know.

Sebastopol Hardware paint department carries it.

Alcohol that highly concentrated is extremely flammable. The fumes are combustible. I don't advise keeping it in the house.
