The End of the American Dream? Eyewitness Accounts of the Humanitarian Crisis at the Border and in our Own Backyard, will be presented on Saturday February 29 at 7pm at a free community event about the humanitarian crisis at the US/Mexican border as well as current immigration issues in Sonoma county.
The event will be held at Congregation Shomrei Torah 2600 Bennett Valley Road in Santa Rosa.

Local activist, Padi Selwyn, recently returned from 10 days at the Matamoros. Mexico refugee camp where she worked with numerous humanitarian organizations in bringing needed supplies to over 2,000 refugees hoping to cross into the United States for asylum after traveling from countries in Central America where their lives were in danger. She has captured heart wrenching images from the camps and will talk about her experiences and the current status of the impact of our immigration policies.

According to Selwyn, Trump’s Remain in Mexico Program has created a horrendous humanitarian crisis at the border.

“Asylum seekers are no longer allowed to apply for asylum when they enter the US. They are now sent back to Mexico to await a kind of “lottery” to be able to submit application for asylum. People are now being told to wait in Mexico for up to 2 years. The border towns are extremely dangerous, where refugees are preyed upon by local cartels.

Over 50,000 asylum seekers including young children, have been sent back into Mexico where many are living in concentration camps on the southern border of the United States, where they are being brutalized with dehumanizing conditions and dying.

Also on the panel will be Ana Salgado, another local immigration activist and vice-president of Comite Vida, an organization that educates and mobilizes residents of Sonoma County about legal and social justice issues affecting the lives of immigrants and our entire community.

Immigration attorney, Rick Coshnear with VIDAS, who has represented local asylum seekers, will be on the panel as well.Opportunities for local residents to take action and learn more about this issue will be available.
