Garry Trudeau of Doonesbury fame as added a blog for military personnel to post to. His website is: doonesbury.com and the blog is The Sandbox. It is an eye opener and for me, as the Mother of a serviceman in Iraq, deeply saddening. I encourage everyone to look at it, no matter your political leanings as these are written by kids who could be from your neighborhood.
Peace,
Kristy

I went to the site and was moved to tears as well while reading it. Afterwards however I took some time to reflect on what I had read.
We must keep in mind that the media manipulates us at every turn. It is never safe to totally trust anything you read, hear or see...ANYWHERE. The disclaimer at the top of the page states that the site is "lightly edited". This throws up a red flag for me. I have to wonder what has been taken out or added or even changed and re-worded. I am not saying that the site is a total fabrication, I just think it is important to remember that every media source and their motives need to be questioned and taken with a grain of salt, or even a whole salt shaker for that matter. Many of the entries are about the same length and have a similar "voice". It sounded to me as if most of them had been "lightly edited" by the same person. My heart bleeds for the state of the world, but I must not let myself be sucked into morbidity. There is hope for change. It lies in our hearts, in our actions, but mostly in how we spend our dollar. Start by looking in the driveway. Our dependence on all oil, no matter where it comes from, is a large part of the problem. Look in the grocery basket. Where has the food you are buying come from and how does that effect the farmers in our community?
Yes, the Bush administration is a manipulative, terrorist force. But I must be honest an accept the role I played, through apathy, in putting them there. I am not talking about voting. I always vote and I did not vote for them. I am talking about the way we live our lives. Ironically it costs me more to buy locally grown organic food and spending that extra money means that sometimes I can not afford to do something or buy an item that I desire. But I remind myself that I am making my voice heard the only way it is heard by rich fascist imperialists...with my dollar.
Moral of my ramble: question everything the media gives you and spend consciously.
Peace to you all.
Namaste.

I went there, read it and wept. Mingled with my tears is my anger at the focus on our soldiers. Hey, what about the lies that brought them there? What about the over half a million people of Iraq and who-knows-how-many Afghani's who died as a result of this war?! What about the demons that obsess us at home - the school killings, the poverty in which far too many of our children live, the no-hope ghettos of our cities, the sickness of soul and dispiritedness of our consumer society, the evil of this administration, the creeping fascism of our military, the endless killing of animals bred to be eaten, all of this (and more) directly leading to the desire to thank those who went to fight for their country.
I don't get it. I don't buy it.
