View Full Version : Nixel Alert Bear Sighting Sebastopol! Worried for my dogs!
I just received a Nixel alert that there was a bear sighting at Hurlbut near Mill Station Road last night!! Apparently the bear tried to get into a goat pen? I am not that familiar with bear habits and nature and am worried about my 2 Cocker Spaniels who like to hang out in the backyard during the day and go out the dog door at night to do their potty business. Should I be locking them inside? They WILL bark and carry on if one was in the yard so would this probably scare the bear away or would a bear get aggressive enough to attach a barking dog? We live off Hwy. 12 near Pleasant Hill Rd.

Above all, DON'T PANIC! That bear does not want to be seen. BTW send it waaay out Green Valley Road, I am ready to be eaten by a bear.
I got the alert and would be worried too. ..

This bear, seen at several different locations, west Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, etc. is likely the same bear. Maybe s/he makes his/her home in the laguna.
We have had mountain lions here. never any trouble. only saw & heard her when she had a cub. when she was "finished" raising the cub, he went on his way (we saw him in the leaving process), and haven't seen or heard either from either of them for since (years, 6-8).

Bears do not want confrontations with humans. They are just looking for food, so secure your garbage and livestock and keep small pets inside at night. Our state was once full of bears, until humans wiped them out...our state flag has a bear. Learn to live with all wildlife, they have a right to be here. We need them for a balanced eco-system. Leave them alone, don't feed them and they will leave us alone.
