Dear Indivisibles,

For the past month, Americans of all ages and all races have turned to students to take the lead on preventing gun violence. Some, in positions of power and right next door, have tried to make this issue about schools. They propose turning schools into increasingly forbidding fortresses, with armed teachers, metal detectors, locked doors, and guards (paid quasi-police) roaming the halls.
But our students cannot be safe in schools if they cannot be safe at home. If they cannot be safe at church, on the playground, at the movies, at a concert ...
Congress has still not acted - but we have.

We raised our voices, and as a result, many businesses have cut their ties with the NRA. Some retailers have set their own, internal rules about what they will sell, to whom, and under what circumstances. Citigroup just announced that, starting immediately, they will no longer do business with any retailer that sells guns to people under 21, or that sells bump stocks or extended magazines. We marched. We called. We registered new voters. And we listened.
One issue. An issue as large as the Women's March. It energized and engaged people of all ages, backgrounds, and viewpoints.
This is what Democracy looks like.

On Friday, Congress and the White House agreed to fund the government through September 2018.
Here are a few things the budget bill includes, despite conservatives controlling the White House, the House of Representatives, and the Senate:

gun violence prevention: Small steps address gun violence by strengthening the background check system to prevent more dangerous individuals from owning a gun. Language that explicitly states that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can conduct gun violence research.
health care: A $3 billion increase in funding for medical research. And no defunding Planned Parenthood.
child care and education: A $610 million increase for Head Start, a program that helps educate kids whose families live below the poverty level. And no additional funding for school vouchers.
climate: An increase in EPA funding by $763 million, including $300 million each for Clean Water and Safe Drinking Water Funds.
arts and humanities: a slight increase in funding, including for NPR and Public Television.
the 2020 Census: A funding increase of $1.4 billion to make sure we accurately count our population, and don't leave anyone behind.
opioids: A $3.2 billion increase in funding for treatment.
affordable housing: the budget for HUD was increased by nearly $5 billion.

These wins aren't everything we need to fight for. And some important provisions weren't included -- like permanent protection for 800,000 young immigrants.

We must continue to resist.

We helped our elected representatives to resist the Republican agenda. You raised your voices to defend our country. You proved that you were ready to hold our representatives accountable for their votes. Congress has no choice but to listen.

We need to keep organizing, and we need you to be a part of it.

How We Behave - the Social Media edition

The Atlantic (https://indivisiblesoco.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b331c517a3ab74f2c06cfea26&id=6aad69f534&e=12b4dfa959) recently reported on a massive MIT study of how news is shared on Twitter. The study examined every divisive news story in the history of the platform. Here's the big conclusion: "By every common metric, falsehood consistently dominates the truth on Twitter, the study finds: Fake news and false rumors reach more people, penetrate deeper into the social network, and spread much faster than accurate stories." This article offers important conclusions both about human nature and about the news ecosystem we are working within.
And as we rethink the best ways to safely use social media, help us ponder our need for positive information that moves our country toward a constantly better place.

ACTIONS

Indivisible Sonoma County registered 19 new voters at the March for Our Lives. As many as 200 Indivisible members mailed nearly 5,500 postcards to connect with voters and encourage them to vote in the mid-term elections. This is how we rebuild our Democracy. The blue wave depends on all of us. Read the Act To Win (https://indivisiblesoco.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b331c517a3ab74f2c06cfea26&id=61d39316c0&e=12b4dfa959) post to learn more about what you can do to build the Blue Wave.
Before you can wrap your head around the news, something changes. Stay nimble and stay committed. Because, just like the students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, we will resist and persist.

SCRIPTS

With our country at state, it's time to protect Mueller.
We urge our Senators to oppose the nominations of Pompeo and Haspel to important roles in this administration. We expect them to oppose the nomination of the NRA's favorite attorney as a Federal Judge. We seek safe social media platforms. And we ask our Members of Congress to oppose, in all possible ways, the appointment of an unstable warmonger to a position of trust as National Security Advisor.
