We eat to nourish our bodies, read to nourish our minds, love to nourish us emotionally and we volunteer to nourish our souls. Volunteering may also be seen as an exercise in self-interest; self-love. When we give back, we build a healthier community in which to live, and we nourish our souls.

“People volunteer for a wide variety of reasons, especially wanting to help others,” according to Susan J. Ellis, president of Energize, Inc. “But it's also OK to want some benefits for yourself from volunteering.

“Some people are uncomfortable with the notion that a volunteer benefits from doing volunteer work. There is a long tradition of seeing volunteering as a form of charity, based on altruism and selflessness. The best volunteering does involve the desire to serve others, but this does not exclude other motivations, as well.

“Instead of considering volunteering as something you do for people who are not as fortunate as yourself, begin to think of it as an exchange. Consider that most people find themselves in need at some point in their lives. So today you may be the person with the ability to help, but tomorrow you may be the recipient of someone else's volunteer effort.”

The Sebastopol Area Senior Center has more than 242 volunteers who contribute to the health our senior community. Some work at The Legacy Thrift and Gift Shop — the retail arm of the Senior Center — while others are volunteer drivers for our Transportation Program. Volunteers assist with fundraising efforts such as the Aged To Perfection or the Driven To Perfection Classic Car Show.

They prepare food, serve beverages and entertain at our numerous program events. They provide office support, and they provide leadership on our board of directors.

Let’s talk dollars and cents. Using the national average, research indicates that volunteer work may be valued at $23.07 per hour. In the State of California, it is valued at $26.87 per hour
