America is a nation that cuts. An adolescent nation, America is overwhelmed with self-hatred, depressed, anxious, double-binded with no way to release the awful emotions, so America cuts itself. Sexually abused by rape, racially abused by lynchings, genocidally abused by the pogrom against the Native People, America lives with nightmares of guilt and flashbacks of shame, and it has no other means to discharge the traumatic memories than through cutting. With Roy Moore razor blades, America slices its skin in acts of self-mutilation. America forces red hot Donald Trump cigarettes into its skin burning visible marks of pain and anguish. “See how much I hate myself for the murder rape slavery that has been done to me!” the fresh wounds and old scars scream. America has a secret stash of Tax Reform X-acto knives to slice deep and release the nation's life blood. America bites itself and Medicare blood drips down upon the floor. America punctures itself with needles of Disability Benefit destruction and denial of childcare for the release of “See my anguish, see it motherfucker!” flaying the tissues of women's rights. A Congress of cutters draws the knife of citizens' collective unconscious across the nation's skin, cutting deep, but not deep enough to kill. Pain is the point. Release of pain from minds too dulled to be aware. Corporations of businessmen and oligarchs profit from the nation's self-mutilation even as they mutilate themselves. The nation's beautiful skin of national parks is forever scarred, the pristine purity of the nation's water is poisoned. “Cut!” screams America. “Cut and cut and cut!” A frenzy of cutting seizes America, cutting and cutting and trying to roll down its sleeves to hide the hideous disfiguration.
