Headach each time i turn on furnace

I'm in santa rosa, this may be due to the fires. My garage still smells like ash. Does the central heater pull some air from the garage? Not sure how it's bringing in that terrible smell, I can even taste it when it's on. Bought new filters, and an air purifier and it's not making a difference. Have tried not to use it, but that's getting hard due to the cold. House is too big for space heaters to be effective. Any ideas?

Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector. CO can cause headaches and way worse, like death. If the furnace heat exchanger has failed CO can enter the house. It's odorless. Central heat should pull air in from the house, not the garage.

Change the filters on the furnace as a starter.
