Coffee chain plans to use drive-thru

40843Why did the Starbucks cross the road? To get ahold of a drive-through window.

The Seattle-based coffee shop, which is currently located on the west side of South Highway 116, has plans to relocate across the street into the former McDonald’s building.

Those plans are almost finalized, according to Jim Costello, owner of the building and Spencer’s Fish and Chips, which shuttered its doors roughly six months after opening up shop in the fall of 2016.

“I’m 99 percent certain the deal will go through,” Costello said.

According to Costello, brokers and lawyers from Starbucks are ironing out the kinks with his lawyers. As of July 10, he believed Starbucks had signed the lease, though he had not yet done so.

“It’s taken longer because of the deal with the drive-through,” Costello said.

Costello refers to the city’s drive-through ordinance, which says no new ones can be built within the city. However, if a business with a drive-though window closed, as was the case with McDonald’s and Spencer’s Fish and Chips, the drive-through could remain in use for a new business, as long as a new business was in operation within a year of the initial closure.
