I'll post a better article when I find one (this tech is being covered more and more) but this glossy page gives an idea of what's coming. This is much closer to what Heinlein's character Gramps Schneider feared - power through the air. This proposal from Qualcomm includes putting coils under the streets to power cars. Somehow I think there's a bit more energy involved with this than there is in smartmeter communications.
